Dans ce but, les diverses touches et leurs leviers correspondants sont disposés de façon à pouvoir être abaissés d'une distance déter minée et uniforme. La barre 54 (fia. 3 et 4) est ainsi abaissée, autour de son pivot 57, d'une distance dépendant de la position du levier à touche 55;

Dans la, variante représentée en fi--.<B>6,</B> les cames 60 sont disposées de façon à, actionner un membre 68 pivoté en un point 69 formant le centre d'oscillation d'un segment denté 7t1 qui, à, son tour, fait: tourner le pignon 71 et;

Printing machine. The present invention relates to a printing machine that can be used with advantage at. copy music. This machine is characterized in that it comprises a magazine for characters, movable, and which can be moved mechanically in order to bring the chosen character in front of a positive device which captures this character, removes it from the magazine and brings it into position for printing.
With reference to the accompanying drawings showing, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention and variants.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of this embodiment, and FIG. 2 a cross section along the line 2-2 of FIG. 1; Figs. 3 to 22 relate to details and variations thereof.
The embodiment shown com takes a frame 1, provided with supports 2 carrying a carriage. $; This has two segments 4, intended to support the material to be printed; it is also provided with arms 5 and 6 between which is placed a bar 7 pivoted to the arms 5 and 6, this bar 7 being able to rotate through a certain angle limited by the two stops 8 and 9. The segments 4 are mounted. - pull a spindle 10 rotating in bearings 11 and 1.2, fixed to the carriage 3.
A tail 14, mounted rigidly on the spindle 10, is secured by a sleeve 18 in a slide 20 which can move between the guides 23 and actuated by means of a lever 24, an articulated rod 25, a lever bent 26 and an articulated rod 27. The operation of the lever 24 will therefore actuate the slide 20 between the guides 23 and the segments 4, carrying the material to be printed, will thus take relative to the printing means a determined vertical position by the size of the travel of this lever 24. The buttons 10a which can be actuated directly by hand also make it possible to adjust the vertical position of the segments 4.
The carriage 3 can also be moved longitudinally by means of a mechanism (fig. 2 and 5) comprising a rack 28 placed at the lower edge of the extension 30 of the carriage 3 and moving, in the direction of the arrows, under the spring action, not shown; this movement is controlled and regulated by means of an oscillating plate 32 pivoted at 33 to the frame 1 and arranged so as to be able to oscillate against a spring 34.
The oscillating plate 32 is provided with a fixed pawl 35 and an adjustable pawl 36 Folding into a groove 37 and held against the adjustment stop 40 by a spring, not shown. These members are arranged in such a way that when the plate 32 is made to oscillate, by means of the rod 42, the pawl 35 is first pulled out (the rack 28, the pawl: 36 then meshing with this creates a mesh and moves with it under the action of the spring acting on the latter until it has reached the full left stroke in groove 37.
It is thus seen that by changing the position of the stop 40 with respect to. the, groove, the oscillating plate 28 can be initiated over a determined distance, the corresponding lateral movement being thus transmitted to the carriage 3 by the, rack 28. The return of the carriage is effected by means of the pawl 43 pivoted on the arm 44 which is itself articulated at 45 to a fixed part of the frame 1 and which is actuated, for example, by hand.
Your bars ca.ractères (fig. 11) are arranged in notches made in the character magazine 50 (fig. 1, 3 and 4) in the form of crown segments pivoted to the frame. in 52 and being able to turn of a certain angle according to the chosen character.
The arrangement of these members is such that by pressing one of the keys 53 (fia. 1) each of which is carried by a particular lever 55 pivoted to, the, pin 56, the character of the segment 50 corresponding to. that indicated on the key is brought into the working position, that is to say in front of the printing member 58 (FIG. 7).
For this purpose, the various keys and their corresponding levers are arranged so as to be able to be lowered by a determined and uniform distance. The bar 54 (fig. 3 and 4) is thus lowered, around its pivot 57, by a distance depending on the position of the key lever 55;
it is obvious that the closer the key levers will be to the -pivot

<B> 1 .. </B> <SEP> i ..._-- <SEP> <B> CA <SEP> _1 __. 11. <SEP> 1 <SEP>, </B> sée. The cxtrémi.tés of the two bars 54 have carnes 60 arranged so as to actuate a lever 61 pivoted at 63 and controlling the arm 62 carrying the magazine to, character 50, the wire lever being provided for this purpose , a fork 6.1 engaged with a city plug 65 provided for this purpose on the arm 62.
In the variant shown in fi--. <B> 6, </B> the cams 60 are arranged so as to actuate a member 68 pivoted at a point 69 forming the center of oscillation of a toothed segment 7t1 which , in turn, does: turn the pinion 71 and;
: Thus the circular character holder 72 carrying the characters ninteresta.ires; it is obvious that the circular character carrier can be replaced by a plate in the form of a segment, the gear ratio between the toothed segment 70 and the pinion 71 being modified accordingly.
A printing member 58 (fi-. 2) pivoted at 72 is arranged so as to grasp the character 73 when the latter is in the printing position relative to this member 58; the oscillation of the latter advances an ankle 75, fixed to the. sleeve 74a, and engaged in the. groove 76 of the cam, the stopper 77 thus gripping the edge 78 of the character while the latter is raised in the printing position.
The printing member 58 is arranged key so as to. be actuated when the button 7 9 (fil-. 1 and 2) is lowered against a res out 80, the rods 81 and 82 acting on the wedge 83 (fig. 2a) moving in the slide 84 so as to. engage it with the tail 85 of the printing member 58. The cam 83 advancing, ca. inclined face lowers it. tail 85, the printing member 58 thus raising the character 73 in its printing position, the bar 7 supporting the material to be printed.
The character bar has three characters whose relative positions are denoted by 86, 87 and 88 (fig. 2 and 11). It is therefore necessary to modify the position of the pivot 72 of the printing member 58 by means of the lever 89 which, by means of articulated rods 90 and 91, lowers or raises

brought into printing position relative to the bar. 7.
Inking rollers are also provided which are actuated by the printing mechanism by means of an articulated system, these open rollers returning to their inactive position under the action of a spring.
A wheel 50a making it possible to print the range, also shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, is mounted on a column 51.a; this wheel is provided with inking rollers 52a, the wheel and; the rollers being switched on and off by means of the lever 53a.
In the variant of the printing device shown in FIG. 8, the, printing key 79, when actuated, lowers a lever 96, the arm 97 of a member pivoted at 98 thus being raised and its extension 99, as well as the tail 95 correspondingly lowered, the 'printing member thus grasping the chosen character and raising it to the printing position relative to the material carried by the bar 7. In this case, the character is also three-row and the pivot of the organ printing can also be lowered or raised correspondingly, this by means of the condé lever 100, pivoted at 101 and actuating the articulated rod 102.
The carriage 3 and the material to be printed can be moved vertically by a distance determined by means of keys 103 (fig. 1, 12 and 13); each of these keys, when lowered, actuates a lever <B> 115 </B>, one end of which is pivoted, the other end terminating in a cam 112 which has the function of moving the ankle sliding 114 subjected to the action of a spring.
and provided at its outer end with a pawl 11.6 pivoted on a plate 108 arranged so as to be able to slide a certain distance on a ratchet wheel 109, this distance being determined, by the key chosen, by means of the articulations 106 and 107, linked to the keys. It will be seen that the ratchet wheel <B> 109 </B> is arranged so as to rotate at a distance regulated by the relative movement of the pawl 116 and of the plate 108, the relative movement of these last two members being ex - Actually determined by the key down.
The ratchet wheel 109 is mounted on a shaft <B> 110 </B> on the other end of which is mounted a toothed wheel 111 actuating a 1st rack <B> 117 </B> fixed or pivoted to the member 20 .
Figs. 14 and 15 show a modification of this device in which the plate 108 here directly actuates the rack 117.
If desired, this device can er; alement move the carriage laterally, as shown in Figs. 19 and 20, this by replacing the ratchet wheel by a rack 160 whose outer end in the form of a fork is formed by two toothed parts 161 and 162 meshing with two pinions 1.63 and 164 mounted at the ends of a transverse shaft fixed <B> 165. </B> A helical wheel 170 with suitable pitch is mounted on the center (the shaft. It is provided frontally with claws 171 and 172, each of which is arranged so as to mesh with the claw of the pinion corresponding.
The teeth of the rack <B>, </B> above the claws are arranged so that the rack can be moved in opposite directions and the pinions have enough play to be put in or out of engagement. the corresponding claws to actuate the helical wheel fixed to the crossbar. This helical wheel is arranged so as to mesh with a rack 174 placed on the base of the carriage 3.
By lowering a key, the carriage will thus be made to move laterally, by a defined distance, according to the key lowered, means being provided to cause any of the pins to mesh with the helical wheel so as to cause the wheel to move. cart in any direction.
Figs. 7, 9 and 10 show a modification of the character carrier in which the magazine carrying the characters comprises three superimposed rows of characters 117, 118, 119 and in which the characters are brought into the working position in a manner similar to that already described. . ' In this case, however, there is provided in addition to the arm 58 a pivoted arm 120 in the form of a fork. be raised by the cam 121 pivoted at 122. This arm 120 is intended to bring the arm 58 to the correct level, to allow it to cooperate with the desired character-holder magazine.
A central opening 1.191 is provided in the upper and. intermediate; the character actuating arm 58 can pass through this opening and thereby bring into position a character bar of either key, both intermediate and lower.
In the variant shown in FIGS. 16 and 17, the characters are arranged on the periphery of a drum 123 which can be rotated to an appropriate position, relative to the printing member, by means of key segments 124, 125 pivoted at 126 and 127 and: arranged in way to. be actuated over a distance depending on the lever of the key chosen, these segments being arranged so as to mesh with a pinion 130 mounted on a shaft 131, rotating in the bearings 139, 133 and carrying the character drum 123.
The characters arranged on the drum 123 are movable and they are retained to the drum by pegs 145 provided at their lower surface; each key character is provided with a <B> 1.35 </B> tenon projecting inwards and arranged so as to be gripped by the two jaws 136 provided at the outer end of the key member of the 'impression. The printing key 79 is lowered against the action of a spring 13 7 and actuates the elbow member 138, as well as the rod 139, so as to actuate the. bush 140 carried by the support 141 on which it can slide.
The movement of the. sleeve 140 outwards closes the jaws 136 (fig. 16), the projections of which engage in the corresponding notches of the tenon 135 of the character, the continuation of the movement of the rod 139 removing the character 135 from the drum 123; if this movement is continued, the. socket 140 continues its. rotation around its pivot and the character 135 held between the jaws 136 is thus brought into the printing position with respect to the paper.
In this case, the carriage is provided with means for advancing or moving the paper or material trough by a determined distance, this by means of stops 148, 1.19, placed on the clamping bar; -e 149a, the. stopper 149 being provided with a pin subjected to the action of a spring and in engagement with the teeth of hi upper surface of the bar 1493.
When the stops are in the. position shown, the paper is clamped in the printing position; if it is necessary to move the paper, the movable stopper 149 is lifted and brought to the. stopper 148, thus entraining a certain quantity of paper: Since the stopper can be brought into any determined position, it is thus possible to drag a defined quantity of paper or other material therefrom.
In the variant shown in FIG. 18, the character key bars are placed on a shaft 150 with a square cross-section, rotating in bearings 151 and arranged so that they can be moved by means of a crank 15 \ 3, the character rods thus rotating until the. desired row of characters is in proper> position, relative to jaws 736, above the printing member; the correct lateral position of the. b; character choice is:
obtained by axially sliding <B> the </B> character carrier, the lateral movement being regulated by the lowering of the bars by the intermediary of the key levers, as described above. Gold; <ine (the printing is arranged in such a way as to be actuated by means of a slide 1523, provided with a roller key 153, the jaws <B> 136 </B> thus being able to function so as to capture the character and to raise it in working position.
The drum 154 is further provided with a bar 155 with a flat surface, on which the material to be printed is placed hanging; printing, the drum 154 can further be raised to the three necessary relative positions when all three icterus are placed on the same bar. These means for raising the drum corner take a lever <B> 156 </B> pivoted at 157 and connect to an extension 158 of the cylinder support, stops 159 being provided for this purpose on the member 160 .
The bar 155 also holds the material on a flat surface while it is in the printing position. The outer surface of the drum is further covered with an interchangeable layer of vulcanized rubber, cardboard or any other suitable material and making it possible to obtain a clear impression on the sheet.
Members 176 and 177 are placed longitudinally on the drum; one of them is engaged with a claw 178 mounted on the pin 179; this member makes it possible to firmly tighten one of the ends of the material covering the cylinder, the other member being engaged with a snap 180 allowing the other end of said material to be tightened; moreover, it is possible to move the paper or other sheet to be printed vertically, this by causing the drum 154 to rotate around its axis; this rotation can be effected in relation to a position indicator 182 by means of a suitable intermediate mechanism, so as to be able to turn the drum to a defined position corresponding to a line or a space of the staff or additional line on any number must be printed.
This movement is effected, for example, by means of ratchets connected by pawls actuated by levers neck dice or other articulated devices arranged to actuate the pawls while allowing the cylinder to move sideways, as this happens. usually done in typewriters. In this embodiment, each of the rows of character bars is mounted in a frame, as shown in FIG. 21. and comprising a strip 170 pierced with holes 171 corresponding to holes drilled in the character trays and through which pass pegs provided at the base of the characters.
When the web is moved longitudinally relative to the type plate, this movement being made against a spring and by means of a cam 174, the characters are released when the type plate is in the working position. .
Fig. 22 shows another form of fixing frame; the type plate is here pierced with circular holes through which the pins of the type bars pass; these protruding ankles have a groove making it possible to tighten them or to tighten them by means of a sliding plate of the form shown, this plate being actuated in the same way as that shown in FIG. 21.
The advantage of the machine described is that it is possible to use a large number of different characters without having to multiply the keys used to operate these characters and without greatly complicating the machine.
