Typographic typesetting machine. The present invention relates to a letterpress composing machine comprising a series of movable magazines which are. locked in position, this machine being characterized in that it is provided with a control device capable of cooperating with a member connected to a mechanism for transmitting to the magazines an upward or downward movement received from the control device. control when the latter cooperates with said member, while means for unlocking the magazines and allowing them to move freely are actuated during cooperation between the control device and said member.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view thereof.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view, on a larger scale, of the operating mechanism, a notched disc and a guard plate visible in FIG. 1 being withdrawn.
Fig. 3 is a plan view, on a larger scale, of the operating mechanism with the guard plate removed.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3, but showing the hand lever engaged with a notched disc.
Reference will first be made to FIG. 1. The dies intended to circulate during the operation of the machine are emma: gasinée in four magazines 1 carried by base frames 2, which are mounted in a movable support 3, so as to constitute a column of movable inclined magazines.
The operation of a hand lever 4 moves, by means of a mechanism which will be described later, the movable support 3 with respect to the frame 5 of the machine to bring a determined magazine 1 (containing the dies of the desired body) in a position suitable for allowing it to cooperate with a dispensing mechanism (not shown) located at the upper end of the column of gasins and with a composter mechanism (not shown) located at the lower end of said column.
The column -of stores is guided, during its movement, by ball bearings 6 mounted on the frames 2 and the support 3, .de so as to roll on the staves 7 forming part of the frame 5 of the machine.
To the mobile support 3 is rigidly fixed a lower extension 8 provided with a foot 8a which is connected to one of the ends, 9a, of a chain 9. The other end, 9b, of this chain is attached to a pulley. 10 loose mounted on a fixed shaft 11 which is supported in spans 12 of .consoles 13 secured to a cross member forming part of the frame 5 of the machine. The pulley 10 has a hub 14 which is attached to a larger pulley 15, also mounted loose on the shaft 11.
One end, 16a, of a chain 16, is. attached to the large pulley, and this chain passes around said pulley and over a return pulley 17. The other end, 16b, of the chain carries a balancing counterweight comprising a support rod 18 </ B> on which a certain number of removable pulses are mounted 19.
The provision is therefore. such that the rotation of pulleys 10 and 15 clockwise, looking at fig. 1, has the effect, on the one hand, of winding the chain 16 around the pulley 15 and, consequently, of lifting the weights 19 and, on the other hand, of unwinding the chain 9 from the pulley 10 and , consequently, to lower the column of magazines 1.
Likewise, a rotation of the pulleys 10 and 15 in the opposite direction to the previous one causes the unwinding of the chain 16 from the pulley 15, thus lowering the weights 19 and the winding @of the chain. 9 on the pulley 10 by raising the magazine column 1.
A straight toothed pinion 20 is integral with the hub 14 and meshes with a pinion 21 on a shaft 22 supported in the bearings of an adjustable arm 23. To the shaft 22 is also fixed a chain pinion 24 which is connected by an endless chain 25 to a chain sprocket 26 fixed to a shaft 27 supported in pa liers .du frame of the machine. A chain sprocket 28 is fixed on the shaft 27 and connected ,. by an endless chain 29, to a chain sprocket 30 (Fig. 3) fixed to a sleeve 31 mounted on -Lui shaft 32 supported in bearings .du frame of the machine.
A disc 33, provided with notches 34 (Figs. 2 and 3), is fixed to the sleeve 31. The shaft 32 is also mounted loose, near the sleeve 31, the sleeve 35 bearing studs 36 which constitute axes on which the hand lever 4 is pivotally mounted. Near the sleeve 35 is mounted crazy, on the shaft 32, a second sleeve. 31a to which a second is attached. disc 33a provided with notches 34a.
A second chain sprocket 30a is fixed to sleeve 31a and connected by a chain transmission mechanism (analogous to that described for connecting chain sprockets 30 and 24 to each other) to a toothed wheel and pulley mechanism ( analogous to that already described and used to raise and lower the column of magazines 1), of which. the role is to raise and lower the second column of auxiliary stores (not shown).
The hand lever 4 is provided on one side with a boss 37 (fig. 3 and 4) which can, by a movement. pivoting of this lever, be engaged in a notch 34 of the disc 33. As the sleeve 35 is mounted loose on the shaft 32, the lever 4 can, after its boss 37 has been engaged in a notch 34, be raised, as indicated by the dashed lines in fig. 1, to turn the disc 33 and, therefore, to rotate (through the chain links described) the pulleys 10 and 15 and lift it.
column of magazines 1. The hand lever 4 is then moved laterally to release the boss 37 from the notch 34, then folded down to the position indicated by solid lines in FIG. 1. If another uprising. column of magazines 1. becomes necessary, the lever 4 is operated to engage the boss 37 in the next notch 34, then it is again made pi vote upwards to rotate the disc 33.
If it is desired to lower the magazine column, the lever 4 is folded down while the boss 37 is engaged with a notch 34, so as to rotate the disc 33 counterclockwise. watch. When the lowest position (shown in Fig. 1) of the hand lever is reached, the boss 37 is released from the notch 34 and, if desired, it is engaged in a subsequent notch. Stops 38, carried by a guard piece 39, limit the movements of the lever 4 upwards. and down.
On the side opposite to the. projection 37, the lever 4 is provided with a second projection 37a which can be engaged in the notches 34a of the disc 33a, to rotate this disc, in a manner similar to that described for the disc 33, and thus effect the raising or lowering of the column of auxiliary stores.
On one side of the lever 4 is pivoted, at 40 (fig. 3 and 4), an arm 47 carrying a roller 42 which, when the lever 4 receives lateral movement, comes into contact. with a flange 43 of the disc 33, to pivot the arm 41 inwards, that is to say towards the lever 4, as indicated by the dashed lines of the. fig. 4.
The arm 41 is connected by the pivot 40 to an arm 44 (Fig. 2) provided with a net colon 45 to which is attached one of the ends of a spring 46 of which. the other end is hooked to a boss 47 of the hand lever 4.
On the other side of the lever 4 is pivoted, at 40a (fig. 3 and 4), an arm 41a carrying a roller 42a which, when the lever 4 is moved from the position shown in FIG. 3 in the position shown in FIG. 4, comes into contact with a flange 43a of the disc 33a, to rotate the arm 41a inwards, that is to say towards the lever 4,
as shown in fig. 4. The arm 41a is connected by means of the pivot 40a to an arm 44a provided with a post 45a (see also FIG. 2) to which is hooked one end of a spring 46a, the other end of which is hooked. to a boss 47a of lever 4.
Consequently, when the hand lever 4 is moved laterally to engage the boss 37a in a notch 34a of the disc 33a, as shown in FIG. 4, the arm 41a pi votes in antagonism at. the action of the spring 46a and, when the lever 4 is released, the spring 46a returns it to the position shown in. fi-. 3, in which the arm 44a abuts against a stop pin 48a.
Likewise, the arm 41 pivots in antagonism to the action of the res out 46 when the lever 4 is brought into the position indicated by phantom lines in FIG. 4 and, when this lever is abandoned, the spring 46 returns it to the position shown in FIG. 3, in which the arm 44 abuts against a stop pin 48 (Fig. 2).
As can be seen more clearly in fig. 2, the arm 44 is provided with a boss 49 to which is fixed one end of a flexible cable 50, such as a Bowden transmission cable, which passes through the boss 47 carried by the lever 4.
This cable 50 (FIG. 1) is connected by its other end to a lever 51 pivoted at 52 on the frame 5 of the. machine. To the lever 51 is fixed a finger 53 which rests against a locking arm 54 which engages with locating fingers 55 carried by the base frame 2 of the magazines.
The lateral movement of lever 4 to the. position represented by dashed lines in fig. 4 and the resulting pivoting of the arm 44 thus effect an unlocking movement of the arm 54 in preparation for the displacement of the column of magazines 1. The abandonment of the lever 4 allows the spring 46 to return the parts to the position in which the column of magazines is locked by arm 54.
The arm 44a carries a boss 49a to which is fixed one end of a flexible cable 50a which passes through the boss 47a. The other end of this 50a cable is connected to a mechanism, not shown,
serving to unlock the auxiliary column of magazines when the lever 4 is brought into the position shown in fig. 4 in preparation for moving the auxiliary column of magazines. The release of the hand lever 4 allows the spring 46a. return the parts to the position in which the auxiliary magazine column is locked.
