Tape holder of an office machine, provided with a device for automatically closing its eyelets The present invention relates to a tape holder of an office machine, provided with a device for automatically closing its eyelets and susceptible to move transversely to the ribbon during each lowering of a key, each of the two #illets of the ribbon holder comprising a rigid arm and a movable arm allowing the eyelet to be opened,
said movable arms being automatically in the closed position during the operation of any key.
In office machines, for example typewriters or printing machines, a tape holder is used with eyelets receiving the ru ban which must be able to be opened quickly and conveniently, by an operator's hand, for the introduction or removal of the ribbon, and then be closed automatically by being struck by a block of any type rod when the corresponding print key is lowered.
The tape holder forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that each movable arm comprises a tab, and in that it comprises stop members intended to be rigidly mounted on the machine in the elevation path. said tabs, so that when the latter are raised by lowering a key, said tabs abut against the stop members in order to pivot to put the movable arms in the closed position.
This tape holder constitutes an improvement over known tape holders, thanks to new and improved means for the automatic closing of the eyelets obtained simply by raising the tape holder without the need for the blocks. of character-holder rods strike the movable arms of the tape-holder as is the case in known tape-holders of this kind.
The closing of the arms can be completed, well in advance of printing, by the character carried by the character-carrying rod, d e so that the risk of collapse puts the movable arms against the fixed arms. before the bottom edge of the tape contacts the bottom of the eyelets is minimized. The time required to close the movable arms can be adjusted according to the different movements of the various oscillating tape holders.
Means can be used to prevent the movable arms from being opened by hand when the tape holder is in the raised position. The automatic closing of the movable arms is carried out in a desmodromic manner, and the arms can be operated without having to increase the normal strike of the key of the machine or to act on said strike in any other way.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment and a variant of the tape holder according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a cross section of a typewriter comprising this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a front view of this embodiment.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of this embodiment. Fig. 4 is a front view similar to the view according to FIG. 2, the moving parts being in another position.
The fi-. 5 is a front view of this embodiment, the movable members occupying yet another position.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the variant. The tape holder is described below and shown in the drawing in its application to a portable typewriter.
If this tape holder was originally designed for application to a particular typewriter manufacture and can be included in said machine without having to modify or significantly modify the existing structure, it must be of course, the tape holder can be applied with equal success to different types and brands of machines, as will be readily apparent to specialists.
First, an individual typewriter character mechanism and known means employed for oscillating, i.e. raising and lowering the tape holder and tape to cover and lower the tape holder and tape will be briefly described to cover and release the tape. discover the printing area when acting on the typing keys.
In fig. 1 is shown a known typewriter mechanism which comprises the key lever 10, mounted so as to be able to pivot and mechanically linked to a character-carrying rod 11 by means of an angled lever 12, pivoting around it. a fixed point and 13 metal wire links. The character-carrying rod 11 is mounted so as to be able to pivot on a sector 14 of the character-carrying rod, in order to perform a movement with the latter, during the breakage displacement operations in the known manner.
On the sector of the character rod 14 is also mounted the character guide 15 and this guide supports, so that it can slide, a tape holder 16, a detailed description of which is given below.
The lower end of the tape holder 16 is linked by a pivot to the device consisting of a set of the viers 17. This set of levers is actuated to raise and lower the tape holder on the character guide 15, for each stroke. printing of a key lever 10, in a known manner. The distance or height at which the tape holder is raised on the character guide 15, during a printing stroke, depends on the setting of a traditional tape control lever 18 which is placed ordinarily at the front. of the machine.
We see in fig. 2 that the tape holder 16 com takes a main member 19, in the form of a plate, which is mounted to perform a sliding movement, in a substantially vertical plane, on the character guide 15. Any lateral movement of this member 19 on the guide 15 is prevented by ears 20 which respectively embrace the vertical edges 21 of the character guide, in a known manner. The upper end of the member 19 is forked and comprises two fixed rigid arms 22. These arms are arranged on either side of the printing zone and they preferably form a certain angle between them, thus which can be seen more clearly in FIG. 3.
The fixed arms 22 have an offset, in a horizontal plane, so as to provide horizontal parts 23 which serve to support the lower edge of a printing ribbon created 24. The ribbon holder 16 also comprises two movable arms. 25 which are respectively articulated by pivot, at 26, on the fixed arms, below the horizontal parts 23. The upper end of each mobile arm is provided with a finger piece 27.
The parts 27 make it possible to easily pivot by hand, towards one another, the movable arms 25 on their pivots 26 to bring them into their open position, that is to say in the re position. presented in fig. 4, which is suitable either for laying or for removing the tape. When the movable arms are in their closed position, shown in fig. 2, they form two closed and elongated #illets E through which the tape 24 passes. Each of these eyelets is limited by a movable arm 25, a part 27, a fixed arm 22 and its horizontal part 23.
The pivoting arms 25 of the tape holder 16 are normally maintained in the meture closed position according to FIG. 2 by a locking spring 28. The central part of this spring is rigidly fixed to the member 19 of the tape holder 16 by a lug 29 forming an integral part of said member. The free ends of the locking spring 28 are engaged so as to be able to slide to move inside notches 30 which are formed in the lower ends of the movable arms 25.
The action of this spring is such that the movable arms are hand held either in their closed position or by holding the tape, shown in FIG. 2, or in their open position allowing the insertion or removal of the tape, shown in FIG. 4 and 5.
The means intended to ensure the automatic closing of the movable arms 25 after they have been or green by hand for the insertion or for the removal of the tape comprise two tabs 31, projecting outwardly, forming part integral with the lower end of the movable arms 25. The legs 31 cooperate with two stop members 32 which are attached to a fixed part of the machine by ears 33.
We see in fig. 2, 4 and 5, that each stop member 32 comprises two short horizontal parts 34 and 35, respectively lower and upper. The short horizontal portions of each stopper member are offset with respect to each other, both in horizontal planes and in vertical planes.
To maneuver the tape holder in order to open the eyelets E for the insertion or removal of the tape 24, it is sufficient that the operator grasps the parts 27 of the movable arms 25, brings them closer together. one from the other in order to rotate the movable arms on their pivots 26, so as to bring the latter into their respective positions shown in FIG. 4, positions in which they are hand held by the spring 28. If, with the movable arms being in their open position, any key of the machine is lowered, this lowering has the effect of closing them automatically and that of the following way.
When a typing key lever 10 is lowered, the tape holder 16 is raised onto the character guide 15 via the set of levers 17, so that the legs 31 of the movable arms 25 approach the horizontal portions. 34 of the stop members 32. When the tabs 31 attack these horizontal parts 34, as shown in FIG. 5, a further elevation of the tape holder has the effect of pivoting the movable arms 25 about their pivots 26, to their respective closed positions, before a character 36 on the character rod 11 is pressed against a plate. 37.
If it happens that the person inserting the tape 24 into the open #yets E fails to place the lower edge of said tape against the offset parts 23 of the fixed arms 22, the upward movement of the tape holder ensures contact with the edge. bottom of the tape 24 with the bottom of the #illets E before the movable arms have closed against the fixed arms. This eliminates any possibility of pinching or retaining the tape between the movable arms and the fixed arms.
The upper horizontal portions 35 constitute safety members to prevent an operator from rotating the movable arms 25 around their pivots when the tape holder is in the raised position. If these horizontal parts 35 did not exist, the rotation of the movable arms around their pi vot in the open position during a lifting would prevent the tape holder 16 from falling into its normal lower position, because the legs 31 strike the upper side of the horizontal parts 34.
The stop members 32 as shown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5 include two distinct parts. But it is possible, if desired, to constitute these two organs by a single part, as indicated by the variant shown in FIG. 6. The advantage of adopting a single piece for the two stop members, as shown in FIG. 6, lies in that said members are always maintained pa ralleles between them and can not be moved independently of one another.
