Ainsi qu'il est général dans les machines à écrire, le mécanisme de commande n'en traîne pas la barre porte-type sur toute la course jusqu'au point d'impression, et le mé canisme de commande n'est pas accouplé à l'organe d'entraînement pendant toute la du rée du cycle;
le réglage de la lame de ressort 30a est tel que le bec 16f frappe la lame avant que la barre porte-type n'ait atteint le point d'impression, et la barre porte-type dé- erit le reste de son parcours en vertu de l'iner tie du mécanisme de commande et de sa pro pre vitesse acquise. L*instant où cette action a lieu est déterminé par un réglage vertical de la lame de ressort 30a. au moyen d'une vis de réglage 31 individuelle à chaque lame de res sort, 30a;
On comprendra que les leviers 40 des deux mécanismes d'avance recevront un mouvement d'oscillation chaque fois qu'un mécanisme clé commande 16 agit pour action ner une barre porte-type 15, mais que le fait de savoir si une bobine porte-ruban est ae- tionnée ou non par son cliquet 47 dépend de ce que le cliquet a ou non la possibilité -d'en trer en prise avec la denture de rochet 40a, On prévoit. des moyens pour permettre aux cliquets 47 d'attaquer la denture 40a des bobines en alternance, de manière à assurer l'avance de l'une des bobines jusqu'à épuise ment de l'autre, puis à rendre l'autre bobine en mesure d'avancer;
En conséquence, l'oscilla tion suivante du levier 45 entraînera pour la plaque 51 un déplacement de bas en haut à partir de sa position de la fig. 3. La plaque <B>51</B> comprend un long talon décalé 51c corres pondant à la barrette transversale du G, dis posé entre le cliquet 47 et la denture 40a, de telle sorte qu'à la position de la fig. 3, le cli- quet ne peut pas attaquer la denture;
6 respectivement.

Fig. 10 is a plan view of the pivoting support device of the left reel.
We see on the fi-. 1 a vertical section of a typewriter actuated by a motor.
The key carrier bars 10 are articulated on a transverse rod 11 and guided at their inner end by a suitable key comb 12, the keys being biased by springs 13. The bars 10 control a motor mechanism comprising a roller or drum motor 14 normally rotating in the direction of the arrow when the machine is in operation. Each key controls its own control mechanism, each of which cooperates with the motor roller 14 to actuate the corresponding type-carrier bars 15.
The control mechanism comprises a lever 16 (fig. 1) having a deep notch 16a by means of which this lever can pivot on an individual support bar 17 adjustable in longitudinal position clans .la support bar 1.8. The support bar 18 is slotted at 18a to receive both the levers 16 and the rounded end of the associated support bars 17. The levers 16 are held applied against the corresponding support bars 17 by springs 19 anchored to lugs provided on the bars 17.
The upper end of each of the levers 16 is connected by a link 20 to an arm 15a carried by the associated type carrier bar 15. The fi, -. 1 shows only a type carrier bar 15 and a single lever 16 with the associated elements, but it should be understood that a set of similar elements is provided for each character key 10 of the machine.
The type carrier bars are pivotally mounted. by means of an articulation wire 21 of curved shape (FIG. 1) in a circular sector 22 of usual shape fixed to the usual type carrier basket (not shown) and forming part thereof. This cor beille may be movable to allow printing of the upper characters, or it may be the carriage 23 which is provided movable vertically for the same purpose. The sector 22 can be provided with the usual type guide 24 and.
of the oscillating guide 25 of the ribbon guided vertically on the type guide 24 and normally occupying the position of FIG. 1 where it is below the print line. The vibrator is actuated and controlled by means which will be described below.
Each control mechanism comprises, in addition to the lever 16, a cam 26, L-shaped, articulated at 16b on the lever 16 and returned in the anti-clockwise direction by a spring 27 anchored to an ear of the cam 26, on the one hand, and to one lug of lever 16 on the other. The sub-lever 16 has an extension. 16c on which is mounted at 16d to pivot and slide an intermediate lever 28 having a shoe. offset 28a applied against cam 26 and another similar shoe <B> '</B> 8b resting against a heel 10a of the test bar 10.
The intermediate lever 28 is peeled in the direction of clockwise by a spring 29 anchored to an ear of the intermediate lever 28, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, to a 16th stop provided on the extension. is lying. 16c; this spring. maintains. also the intermediate lever 2Q in its left position (fig. 1) with the pivot 16d placed in the right end of the slot through which the lever 28 is mounted on the axis 16d.
Lowering the button 10 causes the intermediate lever 28 to oscillate counterclockwise (fig. 1) and turns, via the shoe 28n, the cam 26 in the direction of the needles, setting thus engages the serrated edge 26a of the cam with the motor roller 11 which will henceforth drive it.
The motor roller then turns the cam 26 and, as a result of the eccentricity of the edge of the cam with respect to the axis 16b, the lever 16 will oscillate in the direction of the needles in opposition to the tension of the spring 19 , thereby actuating the type-holder bar, and is placed in the printing position. Towards the end of the actuation of the cam 26 by the motor roller, the nozzle 16f of the. cam 26 attacks an adjustable elastic blade 30a forming part of the elastic comb 30 and is. thus stopped.
As is general in typewriters, the operating mechanism does not drag the type-carrying bar all the way to the point of printing, and the operating mechanism is not coupled to the printing point. the drive unit throughout the rée of the cycle;
the adjustment of the leaf spring 30a is such that the nose 16f hits the blade before the type carrier bar has reached the impression point, and the type carrier bar derives the remainder of its travel under the inertia of the control mechanism and its own acquired speed. The instant at which this action takes place is determined by a vertical adjustment of the leaf spring 30a. by means of an individual adjustment screw 31 at each res leaf blade, 30a;
a leaf spring is provided for each of the drive units. The elastic leaves 30a form part of a spring in the form of a comb 30 fixed to the support bar 18. This elastic comb 30 is. also slotted to provide bracing and guiding the adjustable support bars 17.
When the spout 16f hits the res blade comes out 30a, the active edge 26a of the cam disengages from the motor roller 14 by a translational movement, sliding the spout 16e to the right (fig. 7) over the blade. spring 30a. As soon as the edge 26a of the cam is released from the driving roller 14, the spring 27 quickly returns the cam 26 to the position shown in FIG. 1 in relation to lever 16.
During the actuation of the type carrier bar 15 by the operating mechanism 16, the intermediate lever 28 is driven in a clockwise direction. If the key bar 10 is kept down, the left end of the heel 28b of the intermediate lever attacks the right side of the heel 10a., And the parts remain in this position as long as the key is kept down, thus preventing the control mechanism from repeating its operation.
A slight movement is provided between the heel 10a and the heel 28b in the normal position of the elements, so that the touchpad bar 10 is. released, the spring 29 quickly returns the intermediate lever 28 to the position of FIG. 1, allowing a new escape from the operating mechanism following the lowering of the button.
In typewriters, the ribbon mechanism and the ribbon vibrator are generally actuated by universal bars which are either directly actuated by the control mechanism or which are actuated .. by the buttons or certain train components transmission between the type carrier bars and the keys. The tape mechanism is actuated by a separate operating mechanism which is simply made operative by operation. key control mechanisms 16 of the type-holder bars by means of a universal bar actuated by the control mechanisms.
On .the frame of the. machine (fi, -. 1 and 2) pi vote a transverse shaft 32 on which is mounted a universal bar 33 before the shape of a pallet. This is attacked by nozzles 16g forming part of the levers 16 so that each time a control mechanism 16 is actuated, the universal bar 33 is. driven in the opposite direction of the needles (fig. 1 and 2) against the tension of a return spring 33a anchored to the universal bar 33. This movement of the bar 33 serves to trigger a mechanism <B> of </ B> control designated by the general reference 34 in FIG. 2.
This control mechanism 34 comprises (FIG. 2) a suitable frame or frame pivoting at 35a on a suitably fixed part 35. mounted on the main frame of the machine. An elliptical cam 34a pivots at 34b in the frame of the key control mechanism 34, and this cam is provided with two fingers 34e diametrically opposed to the pivot 34û and one or the other of which is normally engaged by an arm 34c7 articulated at 34th in the frame of the control mechanism 34.
This arm 34d is returned in the direction of clockwise by a torsion spring 34f partially wound around the axis of pi votement 34e and aecroehé to the legs of the arm 34d, on the one hand, and to the frame of the mechanism control 34 on the other.
On the axis 34e (fig. 2) also pivots a trigger lever 347 having an offset heel 341c which cooperates with one of two lugs 34i provided on the cam 34a at two points diametrically opposed with respect to the axis 34b of the cam.
The lever 34d subjected to. the action of the spring presses on one of the fingers 34c. # and thus tends to rotate the cam 34a clockwise, thus keeping the lug 34i in contact with the heel 34h .; in this position of the elements, there is a small clearance between the active edge of the cam 34cr and a large diameter phis flange 14a forming. body with the motor roller 14 or attached thereto.
The universal bar 33 is connected by a connecting rod 36 (fig. 2) to the release lever 34g, so that a movement printed on the universal bar 33 in the anti-clockwise direction by the locking mechanisms. control 16 communicates a clockwise movement to the trigger lever S4g, releasing heel 341 from the er @@ ot 34i.
At the same time, a heel 34, j of the trigger lever 34g interposes in the trajectory of the second lug 34i. The shaft 32 is provided at its two ends with arms 32a, one of which is. connected by a rod 37 to a heel provided in the frame of the key control mechanism 34. When the elliptical cam 34a is released in the manner just described, its active part engages with the part 14a. of the motorized roller <B> 14 </B> which, therefore, drives it clockwise (fig. 2).
As a result of the eccentricity of the cam 34a, the frame of the control mechanism 34 thus sees a tilting movement in the direction of the needles driving the link 37 upwards and causing the shaft 32 to oscillate in the opposite direction. needles.
The operating mechanism 34 is. returned by a spring 35a (fig. \?) anchored, on the one hand, to the frame of the control mechanism and, on the other hand, to a mat of the frame 35. The return stroke is limited by an elastic buffer <B > 35e </B> on which the cam-holder frame bears and which is mounted on frame 35.
To each of the arms 32a. is articulated a connecting rod 38 corresponding to each of the reels of tape, these rods actuating two mechanisms for advancing the tape 19, corresponding to each of the reels. The drawing shows the tape feed mechanism on the left side of the machine; it will be understood that the two mechanisms are of similar construction and that it will suffice to describe only one. The side flanges 39 of the main frame have a wide notch 39a (FIG. 1) to house the coils; the left coil being designated by 40 in figs. 2 and 3.
The tape advance and reversal mechanism for each reel is mounted as a self-contained unit in the notch 39a of the associated frame flange 39, via a plate 41 screwed at 42 to the flange. 39.
On the plate 41 (fig. '_', 3 and 10) is riveted a shouldered pin 41a which constitutes one of the journaling pins of the tape holder reel 40, the other pin being formed by a pin 12a made in the end of a button 42a carried by the key blade spring 43, mounted rigidly by means of clamping screws 44 on a bracket 41b making. body with plate 41. By grabbing. button 42 by hand (fig. 10) and pulling it out. to the right, you can easily insert the tape spool into the machine or remove it.
The connecting rod 38 corresponding to the coil 40 on the left is connected to one of the arms of a lever 45 (fig. 2 and 3) pivoting on an axis 46 carried by the plate 41. One of the arms of the lever 45 carries at 45a an articulated advance pawl 47 biased by a spring 48 in the clockwise direction.
The feed pawl 47 is made of sheet metal and has an offset nose 47a which engages a ratchet toothing 40a of customary shape cut in the cheeks of the tape holder coil 40 when the feed mechanism is in the desired state for feed the ribbon on the left spool, as shown in fig. 2.
It is obvious that every time a bar holder type 15 is. actuated by its control mechanism 16, the universal bar <B> 33 </B> is also actuated and operates the mechanism 34 in the manner described above to impart an oscillation to the shaft 32, thus driving out both connecting rods 38 up and to the left. If the pawl 47 of the fie. 2 is. in engagement with the toothing 40a, this displacement of the connecting rods 38 causes a displacement of the lever 45 associated with the pawl 47 in the direction of the needles thus advancing the spool 38 in the direction of the needles.
It will be understood that the levers 40 of the two advance mechanisms will receive an oscillating movement whenever a key control mechanism 16 acts to actuate a type bar 15, but whether a tape spool whether or not it is actuated by its pawl 47 depends on whether or not the pawl has the possibility of engaging the ratchet toothing 40a. means for allowing the pawls 47 to attack the toothing 40a of the coils alternately, so as to ensure the advance of one of the coils until the other is exhausted, then to make the other coil able to move forward;
this mechanism is controlled by the tension generated in the ribbon when the idle spool is exhausted. A lever 50 pivots at 49 on the plate 41 and a plate 51 is articulated at 51a to this lever, the shape of the plate 51 somewhat resembling that of the letter G turned from right to left. On the plate 51, an intermediate arm 52 pivots at 51b, connected by an elastic link 53 to one of the arms of a tension lever 54 articulated at 41c on the plate 41.
The tensioning lever 54 has a tape guide heel 54a in which an open tape guide slot 44b (FIG. 10) is made, this lever being biased clockwise against a stop 41b by a spring 55.
Fig. 3 shows the left spool 40 in the state of free rotation, that is to say that the tape R unwinds from this spool and that the pawl 47 is released. The tape being fixed to the reel, there will come a time when this tape will no longer be able to unwind from reel 40 and will thus be immobilized: it will then tend to. stand up and will swing lever 54 counterclockwise (fig. 3). Due to the presence of the elastic link 53, the intermediate lever 52 will tilt in the direction of needles to enter the path of a heel 45b offset from the lever 45.
Consequently, the following oscillation of the lever 45 will cause the plate 51 to move up and down from its position of FIG. 3. The plate <B> 51 </B> comprises a long offset heel 51c corresponding to the transverse bar of the G, placed between the pawl 47 and the teeth 40a, so that in the position of FIG. 3, the pawl cannot attack the teeth;
but when the frame 51 has been moved upwards, as we have just seen, up to the position of FIG. 2, the pawl 51 will be able to engage with the teeth 40a. The pawl 47 can then effectively drive the spool 40 during each oscillation of the lever 45 in the direction of the needles, as in FIG. 2, which shows the mechanism to advance the left coil to the active state.
In order to prevent any retro-grade movement of the reel driven by the operating pawl 47, a pawl 56 is provided of construction quite similar to that of the pawl 47 and also attacked by the heel 51e. The pawl 56 is biased counterclockwise by a spring 57 anchored to a heel of the plate 51, on the one hand, and to a heel of the pawl on the other. The pawl 56 is articulated on a fixed latch 58 fixed to the plate 51 by a screw 59, the latch 57 being prevented from rotating on the plate 41 by a stop provided on this latch and penetrating into a hole in the plate 41.
To the plate 41 is connected by means of an articulation with clearance 60a (fig. 2, 3 and 9), an arm 60 mounted on a transverse axis 61 rotating. in the frame. The plate 61 of the right coil (not shown) is likewise connected at 62a to an arm 62 disposed at the other end of the axis 61, next to the. plate 41 for the right reel advance mechanism, such that the axes 60a, 62a corresponding respectively to the two coils are offset by approximately 180 "on the shaft 61 (fig. 9).
It is evident that when the plate 51 moves from the bottom to the top of its position of FIG. 3 to that of FIG. 2, as described, the plate 51 of the right coil will be driven up and down, releasing. thus the pawls 47 and 56 of the right reel with its teeth 40a, and freeing the reel which now turns mad. This state of the elements can be understood from figs. 2 and 3 looking at fig. 3 as representing the mechanism of the right coil.
It is evident that the tension control lever 54 of the free spool places this spool in the driving state whenever the spool becomes exhausted and sufficient tension is established in the tape to move its tension lever. 54 counterclockwise.
To allow the operator to reverse the direction of the tape advance, the viers 50 are provided with pushers 50a which the operator can manipulate from bottom to top or top to bottom as required.
In order to maintain the plates 51 in their positions of alternating movement, an extension 62b (fig.?, 3 and 9) is provided on the arm 62 which attacks one of the branches of a res out of the toggle 63, the another branch is articulated on an axis 64 (7.u frame.
The toggle spring 63 is relatively stiff, so that the actuating lever 45 and the intermediate lever 52 of one or the other of the coils 40 only need to lift the plate 51 associated with it a little above. beyond .the dead center of the toggle spring 63, so that the latter quickly places the plates 51 in their other position.
One of the advantages of the ru ban mechanism described consists in that it exerts a very low but constant load on the control mechanism of the bars of the type, in particular during periods of reversal of the ru ban. In fact, in ordinary tape mechanisms, the entire power required to ensure the reversal of the tape feed mechanism imposes an additional load on the type-carrying bar mechanism and, consequently, the type-carrying bar gives , while. the inversions of the ribbon, a lighter impression than elsewhere; this is especially true in the case of motor-operated typewriters in which the striking force is independent of the action of the operator on the keys. This fault is due to the fact that the motor units actuating.
the bars are set to give uniform typing when one of the spools spins freely, which is normal outside of brief ribbon reversal periods. It follows that the additional load imposed on the control mechanism of the bars at the time. The inversion exerts a considerable excess load on it and slows down the operation of the type carrier bars to a sufficient extent that they can give more than a slight impression. If the ribbon mechanism is very slow in its reversals, as is very often the case in the. In practice, it may happen that the printing of several characters is lighter than that of the others.
On the other hand, given that the control mechanism 3.1 operates constantly under a string power but relatively high and that this power is applied directly to the tape mechanism, the tape is immediately reversed and the excess load is exerted on the tape mechanism. the driving roller 1.1 which contains for this purpose a considerable excess of power, and this excess does not apply to any of the control trains of the type carrier bars.
The flange 14a of the motor roller which drives the cam device 34 has a diameter somewhat larger than the main body of the roller, so that the tape mechanism is driven at a speed somewhat greater than the type bar; this ensures that the ribbon will be fully advanced before the next type carrier bar has reached its printing position, as well as the immediate inversion of the ribbon, thus reducing the typing of several successive characters to a minimum on the same ribbon stitch.
The oscillating guide 25 of the ribbon (fig. 1) is actuated by a mechanism shown at the bottom left of this figure, and which figures 4 to 8 show in several successive positions to which it can be adjusted by adjustment. the hand.
On the main frame, towards the middle of the machine, is mounted a small vertical frame 65 and presenting. a heel 65a on which the lever 66 pivots, the end of which is. connected by a connecting rod 67 to the tape guide 25. On the lever 66 is articulated a rod 68 which constitutes with a similar rod 69 a toggle, the common articulation of the toggle 68, 69 being connected by a control rod 70 to a control lever 71 articulated at 65T on the frame 65.
The lower arm of the lever 71 is connected by a rod 72 to the uni verselle bar 33 near the middle thereof. As the universal bar 33 is operated in the 1st direction of clockwise, each time the character is pressed, the rod 72 will be pushed to the left according to the figures of 4 to 8, causing the lever 71 to swing clockwise. and pulling the link 70 to the right.
This action tends to straighten the toggle 68, 69 and consequently to tilt the lever 66 counterclockwise to raise the connecting rod 67 as well as the guide 25. The level of the guide 25 depends on the height. position of the articulation of the lower end of the toggle link 69.
To this end, the rod 69 is articulated cry 73a on a control lever 73 fixed to a shaft 74 journaled in the plate 65. The shaft 74 extends towards the left side flange 39 (fig. 5) and is provided with 'an arm 75 connected by a connecting rod 76 to a key or your control box 77. This tablet can oscillate in a vertical plane on an axis 77a mounted on a bracket 78 fixed to the main frame. By tilting the shelf 77 upwards or downwards on its axis 77a, it is thus possible to move the connecting rod 67 to the right or to the left at will to consequently control the movement of the guide.
Normally, the common axis of the toggle 68, 69 is coaxial with the shaft 74, so that the oscillating movement of the ribbon is not disturbed by the handling of the tablet 77.
Apart from the normal escalated position of the guide 25, for which the ribbon R is placed below the printing line, there are four other possible positions for the key guide ribbon, namely a stencil position for which the tape is not moved far enough to interpose in the path of the type carrier bars, and three other positions for which the type hits one of the following three areas of the ru ban: an area or band along the edge top, a middle area or band and an area or band along the bottom edge, thereby ensuring the tape is exhausted.
Fig. 4 shows the position of the mechanism for which the tape guide is raised to the level following the minimum level, ensuring the strike through the upper strip adjacent to the upper edge of the tape. It is. evident that, as a result of the constant angle of the lever 71 in its movement under the effect of the universal bar 33, the common axis of the rods 68, 69 and 70 only moves the lever 66 up and down. 'a relatively small amount in FIG. 4, owing to the fact that the lower axis 73a occupies the second position from the bottom among the four possible positions which it can take under the control of the lever 73.
If the lever 73 is then tilted by a small amount anticlockwise, the pin 73a rises to the position of FIG. 6 for which the relative angle of the links 68, 69 is greater. In this position, the constant movement communicated to the common axis of the toggle 68, 69 by the connecting rod 70 will cause the lever 66 to rise to a greater distance than in FIG. 4 and the strike will be made through the middle strip of the ribbon.
The lever 73 being tilted the maximum distance in the anti-clockwise direction as in fig. 7, the pin 73c, is lifted even higher and the tape guide is also lifted a further amount, so that the strike will take place in the lower area of the tape. Finally, the lever 73 being placed in the position of FIG. 8, the toggle 68, 69 is almost re-erected and the movement of the common axis exerts very little effect to lift the lever 66.
In fact, the lever 66 is first slightly raised and then slightly lowered and this movement is not sufficient to raise the tape guide to a sufficient level to raise the tape to the level of the pressure line, this position being hence used for stencil typing. This position is called the stencil position.
The lever 70 is held in these various positions by a spring lever 7 9 pivoting at <B> 65th </B> on the frame 65 and returned clockwise by a spring 81 anchored, on the one hand, to a heel of the lever 79 and on the other to a heel formed in an arm 73b of the lever 73. The spring arm 79 carries a roller 79a which can engage in one or the other of two notches <I> 73c , 73d </I> to keep lever 73 in the position of fig. 4 or in that of FIG. 6 respectively.
The lever 73 comprises folded milk 73e and 73f which serve not only to limit the angle of rotation of the lever 73 to approximately 45, but also to elastically retain the lever in its extreme positions thanks to the wedging of the roller 79a between the heels and the edge of the lever 73. To reduce the noise due to the fall of the guide 25, the frame 65 has an arm 65c. carrying an elastic buffer 65b of rubber or elastic synthetic plastic material of suitable characteristics.
