Device used to start and stop a controlled machine and to vary its speed. The object of the present invention is a device for starting a controlled machine and for varying its speed.
According to the invention, the device comprises a control shaft comprising stepped pulleys and provided with interrupted edges placed between these pulleys, this shaft cooperating with a pulley controlled by the intermediary of a belt passing around said shaft and the pulley. controlled, and means for moving the shaft along its axis as it rotates, so as to pass the belt from one of the stepped pulleys to the next.
The object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a plan, some parts being partially broken away; Fig. 2 is a side view of the apparatus of FIG. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on a larger scale on 3-3 (fig. 2) and shows the plate on which the motor is mounted, various members located below the plate being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section along 4-4 (fig. 3); Fig. 5 is a vertical cross section along 5-5 (Fig. 3); Fig. 6 is a partial vertical section along 6-6 (fig. 1); Fig. 7 is a detail of the control mechanism of the start switch, this mechanism being shown partly in plan and partly in horizontal section.
In these figures, the engine 1 is supported by the wings 2 of a cast iron frame comprising an upper horizontal plate 3 provided with lugs 4 directed downward. The assembly of the plate 3 and the motor mounted on it is arranged to receive a reciprocating movement in the longitudinal direction of a plate 5 which is fixed across the lower longitudinal frame members 6 of a table or support comprising legs 7 which support a table top 8.
The shaft 9 of the motor is provided with a cylindrical element 10. Between the cylindrical element 10 of the shaft and the motor, there is provided a series of stepped pulleys such as 11, 12, 13 and 14 of diameters. croissants. These pulleys are provided with flanges used to separate them.
A helical groove 15 is made around the series of pulleys, such that it intersects all the flanges separating these pulleys. A round belt 16 is arranged to pass over one of the pulleys and around a large belt pulley 17 mounted on a shaft 18. Another belt 19 runs from a small belt pulley 20 carried by the shaft 18 to the device to be operated.
The shaft 18 is carried by an arm 21 which pivots at its lower end on an arm 22 pivoting on the lower horizontal shelf or support 5. The arm 22 is connected by a spring 23 to a rigid bracket 24 extending towards the bottom. down from shelf 5. This spring is used to keep the belts under tension. A console 25, which can be integral with the arm 24, is mounted on the shelf 5 and comprises two arms 26 directed upwards and between which the belt 16 passes, in order to align the latter at all times with the pulley 17.
The action of the device is controlled by an operating lever 27 which is rotatably mounted above the table 8 and which is fixed to the upper end of a vertical bar 28. The bar 28 is supported. in table 8 and in a socket extending upward from a clamp 29 which surrounds one of the lower cross members 61 of the table.
The table top 8 is provided with a circular ratchet wheel or plate 31 and the lever 27 is provided with an arm 32 which carries a pivoting pawl 33 biased downwardly by means of a spring. The lever 27 and its arm 32 are mounted so that they can pivot to a limited extent in a vertical plane around the top of the bar 28 in order to allow the pawl to be moved over the teeth of the lever. snap-fit plate 31, in either direction, without touching them. This is achieved by bending the upper end of the bar 28 at a right angle as seen at 281. The handle 27 pivots on the end of the bar 28 by means of a pin 34 (fig. 6).
A socket 35, integral with the arm 32 and the handle 27, is open on the other side of the arm 32 and is provided with a transverse pin 36 which extends across the lower end of the opening. the sleeve so as to constitute a stop serving to limit the upward movement of the arm 32.
The bar 28 is provided near its lower end with an arm 37 which pivots on a rod 38 extending below the frame 5. The rod 38 pivots by its opposite end, at 39, on a similar rod 40 which pivots by its opposite end on a short arm 41. The opposite end of the arm 41 is mounted so as to be able to pivot on the end of a rod 42 extending downwards from the underside of the part 5 A spring 43 surrounds the rod 42 and acts on the arm 41 in a direction such that it tends to move the rods 38 and 40 to the left (fig. 3), and, consequently, to return the handle 27 back, that is to say to make it turn to the right, towards its initial position shown in fig. 1.
The frame 5, as stated above, is formed by a piece of cast iron comprising at one of its ends a flange 44 extending downwards and near its other end a transverse flange 45 extending down. This part can be supported by the longitudinal elements 6 of the table and fixed to one of them using a clamping claw 46 and a screw 47.
The shaft 48 is supported in the flanges 44 and 45 of the frame 5. The lower flanges 4 of the part 3 which carries the motor are provided at their lower ends with projections 49 pierced with openings through which the shaft 48 passes. so that the member 3 can be guided in its back and forth movements.
The edges 4 of the part 3 are interconnected by an element 50 extending longitudinally. This element of the frame 3 is provided with ball bearing support rollers 51 arranged to roll at the top of the shaft 48 to support the carriage of the motor 3 during its reciprocating movements. A blade 52 fixed to the element 50 of the motor support is bent so that its opposite end element is mounted on the axis 39 which connects the links 38 and 40 to one another. This constitutes the connecting device by which the carriage 3 receives a reciprocating movement when the handle 27 is rotated in one direction or the other.
The carriage 3 is provided with a support device parallel to the shaft 48 and constituted by a roller 53 mounted on an axis carried by a transverse projection 54 of the carriage 3, this roller rolling on a wing 55 of the frame 5.
The engine start switch is disposed within a box 56 mounted in the frame 5. A lever 57 pivots at a point between its ends on a vertical axis 58 extending downward from the main wall. of the frame 5. Electrical contacts 59 and 60 are provided inside the box 56, the movable contact 59 being connected in any suitable way to the end of the lever 57, so that the oscillation of this der denying in one direction closes the switch and its oscillation in the opposite direction opens the switch. As shown, the contact 59 can be carried by an elbow lever 61 which is connected to one of the ends of the lever 57 by a link 62.
The end of the lever 57 opposite to that to which the connecting rod 62 is connected is provided with a pin on which is mounted a roller 63. The blade 52 fixed to the longitudinal element 50 of the motor carriage is provided with a element folded upwards so as to constitute a surface forming a cam 64.
The reciprocating carriage 3 has an initial position (fig. 1) in which the motor is at rest, the start switch 59, 60 being open, and the belt 16 being in contact with the motor. surface 10 of the motor shaft. In this position, the pawl 33 is in contact with the tooth or end stop of the latching plate 31. When the lever 27 is moved by its first degree of movement to the left (FIG. 1), the carriage 3 moves along its axis to a sufficient extent to force the belt 16 to fall into the groove of the first or smaller pulley 11 of the series of stepped pulleys carried by the motor shaft.
When the carriage occupies its initial position, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3, the cam 64 is in contact with the roller 63, so that the lever 57 is held in the position in which the contacts 59, 60 are open. When the carriage 3 performs its first movement to the right of FIG. 3, the cam 64 moves away from the roller 63 and, at the same time, a surface 66 provided at the edge of the reciprocating movement comes to act on a surface 67 with which the lever 57 is provided to the right of the 'axis 58 (fig. 3). The aforementioned surface 66 is provided on a flange 68 which is located in alignment with and above the cam 52, as shown (Fig. 7).
This action of the surface 66 of the reciprocating carriage on the surface 67 of the lever 57 immediately rotates the lever 57 and brings it to a position in which it is parallel to the surface 66 (Fig. 7). , the left end of the lever 57 descending from the position shown in FIG. 3 and the rod 62 lowering the adjacent end of the angled lever 61 so as to produce the closing of the contacts 59 and 60. The motor 1 begins to rotate as soon as the closing of the contacts 59 and 60 takes place, that is to say - say as soon as the belt 16 has been brought into the groove of the first louse 11.
The electric current can be considered as arriving from a suitable source and passing through a conductor 69 to the motor, then, through a conductor 70, to a contact blade 71 carried by the box 56, then, by a sliding contact 72, to the lever 61. When the contacts 59 el; 60 are closed, the circuit is completed by a contact blade 73 and a conductor 74 through which the current returns to the current source.
The engine having thus been started, it continues to rotate at an approximately constant speed as long as the pawl 33 is spaced at least one notch from the end stop 65 of the plate 31. The lever 57 is held in this position. due to the fact that the surface 66 of the reciprocating carriage slides on the surface 67 of the lever 57 during the entire movement of the carriage 3, until the lever 27 is again brought to its position initial. As the lever 57 approaches its initial position, the belt 16 passes from the pulley 11 to the surface 10 and the cam 64 again acts on the roller 63 so as to make the lever 57 pivot for the bring to the position shown in fig. 3 and open contacts 59 and 60 so as to stop the engine.
As the lever 27 rotates to the left, the belt 16 is moved from one of the stepped pulleys 11, 12 etc., to the next by means of the helical groove 15 which extends across the pulleys. As the belt passes over a larger pulley, the driven pulley 17 rises against the action of the spring 23, to an extent sufficient to allow movement to take place with the belt being kept properly tensioned. The guide device 26 maintains the belt at all times in alignment with the controlled pulley 17.
The spring 43 acts on the arm 41, and, via the links 40 and 38, on the vertical bar 28 and the hand lever 27, so as to press the latter constantly to the right, that is to say say towards its starting position. When the lever 27 has been moved to the left and the pawl 33 has passed over a tooth 69 of the plate 31, the belt 16 is on the pulley 11 and, when the pawl 33 has passed the next tooth 70 of plate 31, the belt is on the pulley 12 etc. If we abandon the lever 27 when the belt is in alignment with the pulley 12, for example, the spring 43 immediately returns the pawl 33 against the tooth 70 of the ratchet plate, so as to keep the carriage 3 in this position again. glée.
Correspondingly, if the belt is on the pulley 13, the spring 43 acts to apply the pawl 33 against the tooth 71 of the ratchet plate. The maneuver lever can be returned to its initial position by raising it slightly so as to make it pivot about the axis 34 in order to allow the pawl 33 to be kept away from the ratchet teeth during dant the return movement.
