Automaton The object of the invention is an automaton comprising a character capable of being animated by movements, characterized by a motor unit mounted in the character's body and whose vertical axis carries a circular plate and a cam whose edge acts. on at least one roller carried by one end of a reduction lever, the other end of which controls the movements of one of the character's arms, an eccentric pin being fixed on the cam and connected by cable to a control arm mounted on a vertical axis carrying the character's head,
the latter being thus driven alternately to the left and to the right, while said circular plate acts by its edge on two series of four eccentrics controlling, by means of cables, the movements of the character's fingers.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the automaton which is the subject of the invention, the character being constituted by an accordionist.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of said embodiment.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the engine block and the ac cordéoniste movement controls.
Fig. 3 is a view along III-III of FIG. 2. FIG. 4 is a view along IV-IV of FIG. 2. The automaton shown is formed of a box 1 on which is placed a mobile subject consisting of an accordionist 2. In the box 1 are arranged all the electrical devices necessary for the reproduction of a 45 rpm disc. synchronized with the movements of the accordionist, including a record player, an amplifier, etc.
In the body of the accordionist 2 is mounted a motor unit comprising an electric motor 4 with vertical axis 5. On this vertical axis are fixed a toothed circular plate 6. and a cam 7. The edge of the cam 7 acts on a roller. 8 pivotally mounted at the end of a reduction lever 9 pivoting at 10, and the other end 11 of which is bent and engaged in a slot 12 of an arm 13 fixed on a vertical axis 14.
On this axis 14 is in. besides fixed one of the forearms 15 of the accordionist. The cam 7, by its action on the roller 8, rotates the lever 9, the arm 13 and the forearm 15, which communicates to the latter movements having the effect of pulling and pushing the accordion 16. The roller 8 is constantly kept in contact with cam 7 by means of a return spring 17 acting on lever 9.
On the upper face of the cam 7 is fixed an eccentric eyebolt 18 to which is attached a cable 19 passing over a return rod 20 and the end of which is fixed to an arm 21 mounted at the lower end of an axis vertical 22 carrying the head of the accordionist. To the arm 21 is further fixed one end of a return spring 23, the other end of which is attached to a fixed point 24 of the frame 25 of the engine block.
During the rotation of the cam 7, the eccentric pin 18 pulls on the cable 19 which acts on the arm 21 and, consequently, on the vertical axis 22 for the head, which causes the latter to pivot in one direction against the action of the spring 23, which returns the arm 21 in the other direction, keeping the cable 19 taut and rotating the head in the other direction. During the rotation of the cam 7, the accordionist's head is thus driven alternately to the left and to the right.
The edge of the circular plate 6 is provided with the toothing 26. Around the plate 6 are arranged two opposite series of four pinions 27 and 27 'rotatably mounted on fixed axes. Each pinion is secured to an eccentric 28 to which is attached the end of a cable 29. One of the series of four cables 29 passes through one of the accordionist's arms, each cable passing through an eyelet. mistletoe 30 and leading to one of the fingers 31 of the ac cordéoniste.
The other series of four cables 29 passes in the same way in the other arm to end at the fingers of the accordionist. When the plate 6 rotates, the eccentrics 28 pull the cables 29 which act on the accordionist's fingers against the action of return springs 32 which keep the cables 29 taut. A cable, not shown, attached at a fixed point, is connected to the eyes of the character so that the latter are moved in a relative movement with respect to the head when the latter oscillates to the left and to the right. A spring keeps said cable taut.
The operation of the automaton shown is as follows. At the front of the housing 1 is provided a slot 33 through which a 45 rpm disc can be inserted. This acts on a control arm placed in the box and acting on the electrical equipment it contains, so that the following operations are triggered: heating of the lamps, starting of the record player, switching on. step of motor 4 controlling the movements of the accordionist, synchronized with the start of the disc.
The arm movement at the end of the disc controls the motor switch 4 and the disc ejection which protrudes out of the slot 33.
In a variant, the reduction lever 9, instead of cooperating with the slot 12 of an arm 13, could act on the forearm 15 of the accordionist by means of gears.
The circular plate 6 having teeth 26 could be replaced by a rubber plate, and the pinions 27 would be replaced by rubber rollers on which the rubber plate would act by friction.
In another embodiment, the character could be other than an accordionist. The cam could act on two rollers each carried by a gear lever controlling the movements of one of the character's arms.
