Lorsque
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Machine for fitting screwed watch case backs Various tools have already been proposed for screwing or unscrewing the backs of waterproof watch cases.
Most are keys provided with more or less complicated devices for gripping the bottom by its notches or holes, or even by its polygonal-shaped ring, and exerting a torque on the bottom.
In a more sophisticated execution, the tool is mounted on a tool-holder spindle, sliding in a vertical socket fixed on a stem.
The cover is placed and screwed lightly by hand on the box held between two flanges. The tool is only used to perfect this tightening. It is therefore not in fact a real machine performing the screwing automatically, from the moment when the bottom to be screwed on the tool has been fixed.
The present invention relates to a machine for fitting the backs of screwed watch cases comprising a support for holding the case and means for holding the back to be screwed on, characterized by means for driving said case back in a rotational movement opposite to the direction of the bottom screw pitch, this rotational movement being able to be slowed down easily, and means for driving said bottom in a rotational movement corresponding to the direction of the screw pitch, when the bottom has come into contact with the case, the latter means annihilating the effect of the drive means in the direction opposite to the direction of the screw thread and operating the screwing of the bottom on the box.
One embodiment is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing.
The fi-. 1 shows the machine seen from the front. Fig. 2 shows the machine seen from the side.
On a frame 1 is mounted a shaft 2 carrying the tool 3. This shaft is driven by a friction clutch consisting of a disc 4 driven by a motor 5 and a disc 6 with ferrodo lining secured to the shaft 2. by means of a ring 7 fixed to the shaft by a pin 8 passing through this shaft through a vertical slot allowing limited longitudinal displacement of the ring. The elastic clutch pressure is provided by a helical spring 9 compressed between the ring 7 and a ring 10 fixed to the shaft in the same way as the ring 7. A nut 11 makes it possible to adjust the compression of the spring.
The shaft rotates in bearings formed by a ball bearing 12 supporting the axial force combined with a needle bearing 13 supporting the radial force. The same applies to drive disc 4.
The shaft can move vertically by means of the lever 14, driving the slide 15 sliding in two guide rails 16.
The shaft 2 is extended by a sleeve 17 inside which slides a cylinder 18, the longitudinal movement of which inside the sleeve is limited by a pin 19 engaging in a groove 20 of the sleeve. A compressed spring 21 is located inside the sleeve, between the end of the shaft and the cylinder.
On the sleeve is fixed a wheel 22 which can be driven by friction by the roller 23 or the roller 24, both driven by the motor.
The cylinder 18 ends with a circular plate 25 on which the tool 3 intended to hold the bottom to be screwed is fixed. The tool shown here is provided with teeth 27 on its periphery to hold screw bases provided with notches. It is clear that this tool can be replaced by another whose shape will correspond to the kind of bottom to be screwed, whether it is a bottom with a polygonal ring or with holes.
One of the teeth of the tool is replaced by a lever 28, actuated by a spring and constituting a tightening key intended to hold the base on the tool. When
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the shaft rotates, the end of this tightening key abuts against a vertical cylindrical rod 29 (FIG. 2) which can slide in a bush 30, this in the extreme upper position of the shaft shown in the drawing.
A fitting 31, for example made of nylon, intended to hold the box during screwing, is fixed on a support 26 using a screw 32. The position of this fitting can be oriented by means of the knurled ring 33 and height adjusted by means of screw 34.
Let us also mention, for the clarity of the description, the counterweight 35 retaining the shaft in the upper position, the adjustable stops 36 and 37, limiting the stroke of the shaft downwards.
The machine operates as follows: The shaft 2 being in the rest position, as shown in the drawing, the motor is started which drives the upper roller 23, in turn driving, by friction, the bush 17, l shaft and sliding cylinder 18 in a left rotation. The tightening key 28 then presses against the rod 29 and then opens automatically. The shaft is blocked and the roller slides on the wheel. The friction of the roller on the wheel is a smooth friction, just enough to drive the shaft when it can turn freely. The base is then applied to the tool by simultaneously lowering the lever 14. The key is then released from the rod and clamps the base.
By continuing to lower the lever 14, the wheel leaves the roller 23 and the shaft stops rotating until the wheel 22 meets the lower roller 24 and drives it again in a counterclockwise rotation. At this moment, the bottom comes into contact with the box. By its rotation to the left, the bottom screw thread engages correctly and without constraint in the thread of the box, the torque exerted by the roller 24 and the pressure exerted by the spring 21 being insufficient to damage this thread.
At this moment, the clutch discs are only at a distance of the order of 1 / 1o of a millimeter from each other and it suffices to exert a certain pressure on the lever 14 so that the The clutch this time drives the shaft in a clockwise rotation movement corresponding to the direction of the screw thread.
The cylinder 18 is pushed inside the sleeve, compressing the spring 21. The latter exerts a slight pressure on the tool. Screwing takes place mainly by rotation.
The initial screwing position is adjusted using stops 36 and 37.
The maximum tightening torque can be adjusted using the nut 11, compressing the clutch spring more or less, so that the clutch slips when the maximum torque is reached.
By releasing the lever 14, the shaft rises by itself under the effect of the counterweight 35.
If, during this ascent, the tightening key 28 meets the end of the rod 29, the latter is simply raised until the upper roller driving the wheel again, the key leaves the rod and goes down again by its own weight.
This machine therefore makes it possible to perform screwing as neat as if the back was engaged by hand on the box, and this much more quickly.
It suffices to weigh fully on the lever 14 each time so that all the ends are screwed in with the same torque.
