Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Addressing-Machines, of which the following is a, specification.
This invention relates in general to printing machines and more'particularly to machines adapted to print from successively changing printing devices bearing addresses or other matter.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of a printing machine capable of producing impressions of uniform appearance from printing devices bearing characters in lines of varying lengths.
A further object of mly invention is the provision of a printing machine having a. roller platen and of means for moving the platen transversely of the bed of the machine.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a printing machine having means adapted to produce impressions respectively from a plurality of separate printing devices disposed upon the bed of the machine.v
A further object of my invention .is the provision of means whereby the platen pressure is automatically released to omit portions of the matter on the individual printing devices.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of novel means for adjusting the platen.-
Further objects and advantages of my in vention will be apparent as it is better understood by reference to the following specification when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment thereof, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the machine;

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the. drawings, 1 indicates the pedestal upon which the frame 2 of the machine is mounted. The frame is shaped to provide a work table 3 at its forward end and to support a magav zine 4 at its rearward end in which a plurality of printing devices 5 may be disposed. The printing devices 5 are automatically advanced from the magazine 4 along the bed 6 and beneath the guideways 6 to printing position adjacent the work table 3 by any suitable means, as for example the dogs 7 (Fig. 8) pivotally mounted on reciprocable members 8 which may be intermittently actuated during the operation of the machine through a suitable connection (not shown) with the driving mechanism in a ifianner well understood in the art.
Pivotally mounted on a shaft 8 is a platen arm 9 having an extension 10 below the shaft 84 which is rovided with a cam follower or roller 11. 2 rocker 12 is at 13 on the frame of the machlne and is provided with a cam track 14 adapted to be engaged by the roller l1. The rocker 12 may be actuated by the foot lever 15 or by other suitable means and when so actuated will,
through the cooperation of the cam track 14 only of the travel of the cam track 14, the
roller 11 operating idly in the cam track 14 during the remainder of the movement so that the platen arm 9 after moving downwardly toward the work table 3 will remain in the position assumed during the remainpivotally mounted der of the printing stroke. The foregoing structure is that commonly employed in certain types of addressing machines and further description thereof is, therefore, unnecessary.
The end of the platen arm 9 is provided with lateral extensions 16 (Fig. 4) and the platen head 17 is loosely secured thereto by a bolt 18 pivotally connected by a screw 19 to the platen head 17 and extending through a suitable opening in the end of the platen arm 9 in which opening a spring 20 is disposed surrounding the bolt 18 and bearing against a nut 21 having a knurled head which threadedly engages the bolt 18. It will be readily understood that'the spring 20 resiliently draws the platen head 17 toward the end of the platen arm and that the resiliency of the spring 20 may be varied by operating the nut 21. The lateral extensions 16 of the platen arm 9 are provided with threaded pins 22 loosely mounted therein and engaging at their lower ends the platen head 17. A similar threaded pin 23 (Fig. 8) is disposed in a suitable opening in the platen arm 9 rearwardly of the lateral extensions l6 and engages a rearwardly extending arm 24 of the platen head 17.
A transverse shaft 25 (Fig. 5) provided with a knurled head 26 is mounted in suitable bearings in the laterally extending portions 16 of the platen head 9 and is pro- .vided with worms 27 engaging worm gears 28 which are threadedly mounted on the pins 22. A bevel pinion 29 is secured to the shaft 25 and engages a bevel gear 30 secured to a shaft 31 Journaled in suitable bearings on the platen arm 9 and provided with a worm 32 engaging a worm gear 33 threadedly mounted on the pin 23. By operating the knurled head 26 of the shaft 25 the pins 22 and 23 are simultaneously actuated to move the platen head 17 from the end of the platen arm 9, simultaneously compressing the spring 20 which, as previously stated. resiliently draws the platen head 17 toward the platen arm 9. By rotating the shaft 25 in the opposite direction the spring 20 is allowed to expand so that adjustment of the platen head 17 in either direction is readily accomplished. Upward movement of the pins 22 and 23 i limited by washers- 34 disposed about the upper ends thereof and adapted to be engaged by shoulders thereon. The washers 34 are maintained in desired position by locking members 35 held in position by screws 36. The primary adjustment of the pins 22 and 23 is obtained by rotating the pins with a suitable tool engaging the slots 36 in the ends thereof.
The platen head 17 is provided at either edge with tracks 37 (Figs. 3,5 and s) adapted to support the rollers 38 rotatably mounted on the platen carriage 39. The carriage 39 is connected by a link 40 (Fig. 6) to a bell-crank lever 41 secured to a vertical shaft 42 which is journaled in a downwardly extending portion 43 (Fig. 7) of the platen arm 9 and is maintained in assembled relation therewith by a screw 44, passing through an opening in a washer 45, which rests on an abutment 46 within the portion 43, and threadedly engaging the end of the shaft 42. The free arm of the bell-crank lever 41 is provided with a bevel gear segment 47 which cooperates with the beveled rack 48 on a member 49 pivotally mounted on a pin 50 secured to the platen arm 9 and provided with a shaft 51 extending transversely of the machine, the end of which is journaled in a suitable bearing 52 formed on the platen arm 9 (Figs. 2, 5).
An arm 53 is secured to the shaft 51 adjacent the bearing 52 and is connected by a link 54 (Fig. 1) to an arm 55 pivotally mounted on the shaft 8. The arm 55 is provided with a lug 56 disposed in the path of lugs 57 on the member 58 pivotally mounted on the shaft 8 and connected by a link 59 to the rocker 12adjacent the cam track 14. As will be readily understood when the rocker 12 i actuated the member 58 will be turned about its pivot and when the consequent movement of the platen head 17 toward the work table 3 has been completed the lower lug 57 on the member 58 will engage the lug 56 to rock the arm 55 and through the connections described move the rack 48 rearwardly. The beveled segment 47 being in engagement with the rack 48 will cause the arm 41 to turn on its pivot 42 and move the platen carriage 39 transversely of the machine. Upon the return movement of the rocker arm 12 the upper lug 57 on the member 58 will engage the Mg 56 on the .arm 55 and return the platen carriage 39 to its normal position.
The movement of the link 54 is limited by a pin 60 extending laterally from the platen arm 9 in the path of movement of a pair of abutments 61 secured to the link 54 (Figs. 1, 2'). The pin 60 is provided with a pair of sloping faces 62 and the abutments 61 are disposed at an angle to their line of movement so that the abutments 61 strike the faces 62, glancing blows which effectually stop' the movement of the link 54 and the connected mechanism without shock thereto. The movement of the platen arm 9 toward the work table 3 is limited by a member 63 (-Fig. 1) having a foot 64 adapted to engage a suitable abutment on the worktable 3, the member 63 being threadedly and adjustably mounted on the platen arm 9. The movement of the bell-crank lever 41 is limited by the engagement of an abutment 66 disposed thereon (Figs. 6 and 8) at an angle to the direction of travel of the bell-crank lever with a pin 67 depending from the platen adapted to cooperate with the face of the" abutment 66. The abutment 66 engages the pin 67 with a glancing blow Wlllch effectually stops the movement of the bell-crank lever 41 without shock thereto. The work table 3 is provided adjacent the forward end of the bed 6with a bed 69 (Fig. 3) adapted to support a printing device 70 hearing a date or other matter which is to be printed in conjunction with the matter on the printing devices 5. The printing device 70 is held in operative position by a clamping member 71 loosely mounted on a bolt 72 and resiliently held in operative position by a spring 73. An inking ribbon 74 is disposed above the printing device 5 in printing position and the printing device 70 and may be intermittently advanced by any suitable mechanism well-known in the art to continually feed a fresh portion of the ribbon to printing position.
The platen carriage 39 is provided with downwardly extending portions 75 (Figs. 3, 4 and 8) upon which the laterally extending members 76 and 77 are pivotally mounted. Rotatably mounted in the members 76 and 77 are platen rollers 78 and 79 intended to cooperate respectively with the printing devices 5 and 70. Loosely mounted in arms 80 extending upwardly from the members 76 and 77 are anti-friction rollers 81 and 82 having flanges 83 and 84-. thereon which engage the platen rollers 78 and 79 at either side of the intermediate impression producing portion which is preferably rubber covered (Figs. 1, 8). Springs 85 disposed between abutments 86 on the downwardly extending portion 75 of the platen carriage 39 and corresponding abutments 87 on the members 76 and 77 bias the platen rollers 78 and 79 upwardly.
The pintles 88 and 89 of the platen rollers 78 and 79 and anti-friction rollers 81 and 82, respectively, areprovided at their rear ends with heads and their forward ends are slotted as indicated at 90 (Fig. 8) to receive the ends of locking members 91 secured to the arms 80 by screws 92 '(Fig. 3). As will be readily understood, by loosening the screws 92 the locking members 91 may be turned to release the pintles 88 and 89 so that they may be withdrawn endwise to permit changing of the platen or anti-friction rollers. This is particularly desirable since the platen rollers may be interchangeable and of varying widths in order to printselectively from the matter on the printing devices. For convenience I may provide a plurality of interchangeable platen rollers having differently disposed impression-pro ducing portions adapted to print selected portions of the printing devices. The platen 78 (Figs. 4, 6) will produce impressions from all the printing characters on the printing devices 5 While the platen 7 8" (Fig.
12) will. print only selected lines of type characters on the printing devices 5.
A guide plate 95 (Figs. 3 and 4:) is removably secured to the under side of the platen head 17 by means-of a screw 96 threadedly disposed in the platen head 17 and engaging a slot 97 (Fig. 10) in the guide-plate and by a screw 98 disposed in a suitable opening in the platen head 17 and threadedly engaging the guide-plate. Thus the guide-plate 95 is readily removable and interchangeable for reasons more fully set forth hereafter. The guide plate is provided with a flat face adapted to be engaged by flanges 83, 84 on the anti-friction rollers 81, 82 and with a raised portion 99 of lesser Width adapted to be engaged by the central portion 100 (Fig. 8) of the anti-friction roller 82. The guide plate 95 isalso provided adjacent one end with depressions 101 (Figs. 3, 9, 10,11) into which the flanges 83 of the anti-friction roller 81 move when the carriage 39 reaches the limit of its movement to the left in Fig. 3 corresponding to the end of the printing travel of the roller platen 78 and the guide-plate slopes abruptly at 102 to allow the central portion 100 of the anti-friction roller 82 to move upwardly when the platen carriage 39 reaches this position. The final position of the platen car riage 39 and the parts supported thereon is illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and the purpose of the foregoing structure is to allow the platen rollers 78 and 79 to free themselves from the work upon the work table 3 as soon as the printing stroke has been accomplished, after which the platen arm 9 will move upwardly and the platen carriage 39 will be returned to its normal position in the manner previously described.
It is frequently desirable to omit certain portions of the matter on the printing device 5 and for this reason I provide interchangeable guide-plates 95 having one or more depressions 103 (Figs. 9, 10) in the fiat face which cooperates with the flanges 83 of the anti-friction roller 81. Obviously when the flanges 83 reach a depression 103 during the travel of the platen carriage 39 the spring 85 will lift the roller platen 78 from the work and the impression will not be taken from the portion of the printing device over which the roller. platen 78 passes while the flanges 83 are in the depression 103. It is to be understood that the depressions 103 may be disposed in any portion of the flat face adapted to cooperate with the 'fianges 83 and that any number of interchangeable guide-plates 95 may be provided for the machine to permit selective printing of the matter on the printing devices The operation of my invention will be clear from the following brief description thereof. A plurality of printing devices 5 are disposed in the magazine a and the menuber 63 is adjusted to permit the application of proper pressure by the platen rollers 78 and 79. The rocker 12 is then actuated by means of the foot lever 15 or other suitable mechanism to advance the printing devices 5 along the bed 6 and actuate the platen arm 9. The operator inserts the impression-receiving material beneath the platen rollers 78 and 7 9 and above the ribbon 74. When the platen arm 9 has descended and the foot 64: has engaged the abutment on the work table 3 the platen carriage 39 moves to the left (viewing Fig. 3) and the platen roller 78 causes an impression to be taken from the printing device 5. During the first part of the movement of the platen carriage 39 the roller plate n 79 is held by the spring 85 out of engagement .with the impression-receiving material and is not moved into engagement therewith until the enlarged portion 100 of the anti-friction roller 82 engages the raised portion 99 of the guide-plate 95. The roller platen 79 is then moved against the spring 85 to cause an impression to be taken from the printing device 70, the roller platen 78 meanwhile continuing to operate over the printing device 5. When the platen carriage 39 reaches the limit of its travel to the left (viewing Fig. 3) the flanges 83 of the anti-friction rollers 81 enter the depressions 101 and the anti-friction rollers 82 having traveled up the incline 102, the platen rollers 78 and 79 are lifted by the springs 85 from engagement with the impression-receiving material, and upon return of the rocker 12 the platen arm 9 is raised and the platen carriage 39 returned to the right (viewing Fig. 3) to its normal position in readiness for the succeeding printing operation and without engaging the impressiom receiving material. If the impression pressure as-originally adjusted by means of the member 63 is not that adapted to produce the best results a fine adjustment may be made by rotating the shaft 25 which moves the platen head 17 away from or allows the spring 20 to draw it toward the platen arm 9. The in 22, 23 may be individually adjusted to bring the face of the guide-plate into exact parallelism with the beds 6 and 69.
If it is desired to omit a line of printing characters on the printing devices 5 a platen roller such as 7 8 (Fig. 12) having a corresponding portion of its face cutaway may be substituted for the platen roller 78 or a guide-plate having a depression 103 (Figs. 9, 10) in its facemay be substituted for the guide-plate shown in Figs. 3, 4 to omit portions of the printing device 5 extending trarsversely thereof.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing that I have perfected a printing machine adapted to produce uniform iinp'ressions from printing devices bearing printing characters in lines of varying platen roller 79 will operate idly. It will also be apparent that this platen roller 79 never operates to take an impression from the printing device 5 and that the platen roller 7 8 never operates to take an impression from the printing device 70, the construction and arrangement of parts being such that these platen rollers are automatically moved into and out of operative relation to their respective printing devices dur-' ing a complete movement of the carriage.
I am aware that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing any of its material advantages, theform hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a swinging platen arm, a platen support on said arm bodily movable toward and from said bed, the longitudinal axis of said support being normal to the axis of the forward end of said arm, a
platen carriage on said support, a roller platen on said carriage and means for moving said platen support toward said bed and for moving said carriage on said support in the direction of the longitudinal axis thereof.
2. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a swinging platen arm, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, means for advancing printing devices in a horizontal plane from said magazine along said bed, a platen support on said arm and bodily movable toward and from said bed, the longitudinal axis of said support being normal to the axis of the forward end ofsaid arm, a roller platen car-- ried by said support, and means for moving said platen support toward and from said bed and-for moving said roller platen on said support in the direction of the longitudinal axis thereof.
3. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, means for advancing printing devices in a. horizontal plane from said magazine along said bed, a pivoted platen arm, a roller platen carried by the free end of said platen arm,-
and means for swinging said platen arm to move said roller platen toward and from said bed and for moving said roller platen in a direction substantially normal to the axis of the forward endof said arm.
4. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, means for advancing printing devices in a horizontal plane from said magazine along said bed, a swinging platen arm, a platen support on said arm and bodily movable toward and from said bed, a roller laten carriedby said support, an inking ri bon disposed between said platen and the printing device on said bed, and means for moving said platen support toward and from said bed and for moving said roller platen on said support in a direction substantially normal to the axis of the forward end of the arm. 5. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, means for advancing printing devices in a horizontal plane from said magazine along said bed, a pivotally mounted platen arm, a. platen carria e movably mounted on the free end of said arm, a platen roller mounted on said oarria e, an inking ribbon disposed between said p aten and the printing device on said bed, and means for swinging said arm to move said carriage bodily toward and from said bed, and for reciprocating 'said carriage to move said roller platen over said bed in a direction substantially normal to the axis of the forward end of said arm.
6. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine ada ted to contam a plurality of printing devlces, each bearing one or more lines of type extending lengthwise thereof, means for advancing printing devices sidewise in a horizontal plane from said magazine along said bed, a swinging platen arm, a platen support on said arm and bodily movable toward and from said bed, a roller platen carried by said support, and means for moving said platen support toward and from said bed and for reciprocating said roller laten over said bed in directions substantlally normal to the axis of the forward end of said arm.
- 7. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adapted to contain a plurality of printing devices, each bearing one or more lines of type extending lengthwise thereof, means for advancing printing devices sidewise in a horizontal plane from said magazine along said bed, a pivoted platen arm, a platen carriage mounted on the free end of said arm and capable of movement thereon, a roller platen mounted on said carriage, and means for swinging said platen arm toward and from said bed 65 and for reciprocating said carriage to move said roller platen in directions substantially normal to the axisv of the forward end of said arm. 8. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed, a magazine adaptedto contain a plurality of printing devices, each bearing one or more lines of type extending lengthwise thereof, means for advancing printing devices sidewise in a horizontal plane from said magazine along said bed, a platen arm, a platen support on said arm and bodily movable toward and from said bed, a platen carriage on said support, a roller platen mounted on said carriage and means for moving said support toward and from said bed and for reciprocating said carriage to move said roller platen in directions substantially normal to the axis of the forwar end of said arm.
9. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a printing device, a roller platen, means for moving said roller platen across said bed, and a guide member normally holding said roller platen in operative position and having its face shaped intermediate its ends to allow said roller platen to automatically move to inoperative position to selectively omit the matter on said printing device.
10. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a printing device, a roller platen, means for moving said roller platen across said bed, and an interchangeable guide member normally holding said roller platen in operative position and having its face shaped intermediate its ends to allow said roller platen to automatically move to inoperative position to selectively omit the matter on said printing device.
11. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a printing device, a platen support, a roller platen, means for moving said roller platen across said bed, and a guide-plate secured to said platen support for normally holding said roller platen in operative position and having its face shaped intermediate its ends to allow said roller platen to move to inoperative position to selectively omit the matter on said printing device.
12. Ina printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a printing device, a platen support, a roller platen, means for moving said roller platen across said bed, and an interchangeable guideplate secured to said platen support for normally holding said roller platen in operative position and having its face shaped intermediate its ends to allow said roller platen to move to inoperative positionto selectively omit the matteron said printing device.
13. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a printing device, a platen support, a platen carriage having rollers engaging said support and movable with respect thereto, a roller platen mounted on said carriage, means for actuating said carriage to move said roller platen across said bed, and an interchangeable guide-plate secured to the under side of said platen support for normally holding said roller platen in operative position and having its face shaped intermediate its ends to allow said roller platen to move to inoperative position to selectively omit the matter on said printing device.
14. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a printing device, a platen'support, a platen carriage having rollers engaging said support and movable with respect thereto, a roller platen mounted on said carriage, means for actuating said carriage to move said roller platen across said bed, a removable guide-plate secured to the underside of sald platen support and having depressions in its face intermediate its ends, and anti-friction means disposed between said platen and guideplate and adapted to move into said depressions.
15. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a printing device, a platen support, a platen carriage mounted on said support and movable with respect thereto, a roller platen resiliently mounted on said carriage, means for actuating said carriage to move said roller platen across said'bed, a removable guideplate secured to the under side of said platen support, and antifriction means disposed between said platen and guide-plate, said guide-plate being provided with depressions in its face intermediate its ends, whereby said roller platen is permitted to move to inoperative position.
16. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a printing device, a platen support, a platen carriage mounted on said support and movable with respect thereto, a roller platen mounted on said carriage. a spring biasing said roller platen to inoperative position, means for actuating said carriage to move said roller platen across said bed, a removable guide plate secured to the underside of said platen support, and anti-friction means disposed between said platen and guide-plate, said guide-plate being provided with depressions in its face, whereby said platen is permitted to move to inoperative position under the actuation of said spring.
17. In a printing machine, the combination of a fixed bed adapted to support a plurality of printing devices, a platen support, a plurality of roller platens mounted on said sup ort and each independently movable bodily with respect thereto, means for bodily moving said platen across said bed and rea ies means for actuating said roller platens to cooperate respectively with the individual printing devices.
18. In a printing machine, the combination of a fixed bed adapted to support a plurality of printing devices, a platen support,
a platen carriage on said support, a -plurality of roller platens mounted on .said carriage and each independently movable bodily with respect thereto, means for actuating said carriage to move said plat-en's across said bed, and means for controlling said roller platens to cause them to cooperate respectively with the individual printing devices.
19. 23. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a fixed printing device and a successively changing printing device, a pivotally mounted platen arm, a platen head adjustably mounted on the free end of said platen arm, a platen carriage mounted on said platen head and movable with respect thereto, a plurality of roller platens independently mounted on said platen carriage and resiliently biased toward said platen head, means for moving said platen head toward and from said bed and for reciprocating said carriage to cause said platen rollers to cooperate respectively with said fixed and changing printing device, a plate removably secured to said platen head, and anti-friction means on said carriage engaging said platen rollers and plate, said plate having depressions in its face to permit said platen rollers to move to inoperative position.
24. In a. printing machine, the combination of a platen support, a platen head, a centrally disposed bolt connecting said platen head and support, a spring tending to draw said platen head toward said support,
and means for adjusting said platen head with respect to said arm including a plurality of pins disposed in openings in said platen arm and engaging said platen head, and means for simultaneously moving said pins longitudinally.
25. In a printing machine, the combination of a platen support, a platen head, a centrally disposed bolt connecting said platen head and support, a spring tending. to draw said platen head toward said sup-' port, and means for adjusting said platen head with respect to said platen arm, including a plurality of pins disposed in openings in said platen arm and engagin said platen head, a worm gear threadedfv engaging each of said pins, and means for simultaneously actuating said worm gears to more said pins longitudinally.
26. In a printing machine, the combination of a platen arm, a platen head, a centrally disposed bolt connecting said platen arm and platen head, a spring tending to draw said platen head toward said platen arm, and means for adjusting said head with respect to said arm, including three pins disposed in triangular relation in suitable openings in said arm and engaging said head, worm gears threadedly engaging both of said pins, rotatable shafts provided with worms engaging said worm gears, and a single means for rotating said shafts.
27. In a printing machine, the combination of a pivotally mounted arm and means for limiting the movement of said arm includlng a stop, having a flat face disposed at an angle to the direction of travel of said arm andan abutment on said arm disposed at a corresponding angle and adapted to strike said stop a glancing blow.
28. In a printing machine, the combination of a support, a roller platen, a pintle for said roller platen provided at one end with a head adapted to engage said support and at the other with a slot in the side thereof, and means secured to said support and engaging said slot whereby said pintle is locked in operative position.
29. In a printing machine, the combination of a fixed bed adapted to support a pair of printing devices arranged end to end with the lines of type characters thereon extending in the same direction, and roller means each bodily movable independently of the other arranged to travel in the direction of said lines of type to take an impression therefrom.
30. In a printing machine, the combination of a fixed bed adapted to support a pair of printing devices arranged end to end with the lines of type characters thereon extending in the same direction, a support, means for moving said support toward and'from said bed, roller-impression means carried by and movable conjointly with and relatively to said support, and means for moving said roller-impression means in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said support.

In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a pair of printing devices arranged end to end with the lines of type characters thereon extending in the same direction, a support, means for moving said support toward and from said bed, and roller'impression means movable conjointly with said support and.independently thereof in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said support.

In a printing machine, the combina tion of a bed adapted to support a pair of printing devices arranged end to end with the lines of type characters thereon extending in the same direction, a support, means for moving said support toward. and from said bed, and a pairof roller platens movable conjointly with said support and independently thereof in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said support. 33. In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a pair of printing devices arranged end to end with the lines of type characters thereon extending in the same direction, a support, means for moving said support toward and from said bed, a pair of roller platens movable conjointly with said support and independently thereof in a direction transverse to thedirection of movement of said support to oper ateeach on one printing device only to take an impression therefrom.

In a printing machine, the combination of a bed adapted to support a pair of printing devices arranged end to end with the lines of type characters thereon extending in the same direction a support, means for moving said support toward and from said bed, a pair of roller platens movable conjointly with said support and independently thereof in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said support, one of said platens being arranged in operative relation to and the other in inoperative relation to one printing device, and means emma for moving the latter platen into operative relation to the other printing device.
35. In a printing machine, the combination of a fixed bed adapted to support a pair of printing devices With the lines of type characters therein extending in the same di-- rection, a pair of roller platens, and means for actuating sald platens to move conjointly in the direction of said lines of type WM. 0.
