WILLIAM T. GEARY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PRINTING ATTACHMENT FOR PAPER-ROLL HOLDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed June 1, 1909. Serial No. 499,466.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. GEARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Attachments for Paper-Roll Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in printing attachments for paper roll holders whereby advertising matter may be applied to the paper sheets as they are removed from the roll for wrapping or other purposes, and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient attachment for this purpose.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of the paper roll holder provided with an attachment embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment, Fig. 3 is a section 011 line :22 cc of Fig. 2, Fig.
1 is a section on line y y of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is' a section on line 2 z of Fig. 3, Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the printing roll, and Fig. 7 is a section on line m m of Fig. 6.
The paper roll 1 is mounted in suitable standards 2 connected by the top cross rods 3. Two pairs of bars 4: and 5 are provided at one end with the clamping members 6 and 7 adapted to be clamped together over the rods 3 by means of the bolts 8. The bars 5 extend rearwardly, outwardly, and downwardly, forming hangers 9 in which is pivoted the impression roll 10. The roll 10 is made as wide or a little wider than the paper sheet 11 coming from the roll 1. The bar 4 extends rearwardly, inwardly, and upwardly, forming the supporting bars 12. At their upper ends the bars 12 are provided with rearwardly curved slots 13 having enlarged upper ends 14 and in their lower portions with vertically disposed slots 15, having enlarged upper portions 16. A casing 17 containing printing roll 18 and inking roll 19 is adapted to be mounted between the bars 12.' Rolls 18 and 19 are provided respectively, with trunnions 20 and 21 projecting from casing .17 and provided with annular grooves 22 and 23 adapted to operate in slots 15 and 13. The slots 15 and 13 are so placed that when the trunnions 20 i and 21 are in the lowermost portions of said slots, the printing roll 18 contacts with the impression roll 10 to print the strip of paper 11 passing between. When it is desired to insert the aper strip 11 or to throw the printing attachment out of commission, the casing 17 is elevated and tilted in the slots 15 and 13 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The enlarged upper ends of slots 15 and 13 permit insertion of the trunnions 20 and 21. The, trunnions 21 have slight vertical play in slots 19 in the sides of casing 17 so that the roll 19 may adjust itself to the printing roll. An opening 24 is provided in casing 17 for access to inking roll 19 for supplying ink thereto.
The printing roll 18 is provided with annular flanges 25 at either end and the type sheet 26 is secured between said flanges with printing faces of the type 27 projecting slightly above said flanges. By this arrangement it will be seen that the flanges 25 will maintain contact with the paper sheet and impression roll as the sheet is drawn out so as to keep the printing roll turning in unison with the travel of the paper strip and that when the type 27 is brought to contact with the paper strip, good contact will be made therewith. In use the printing roll 18 is provided on one side with any suitable advertising matter, the paper strip 11 run between rolls 10 and 18 and back under the tearing bar 28, and the casing 17 set with the printing roll 18 in contact with said paper strip on roll 10. By this arrangement it will be seen that as the paper strip is drawn from the roll and used for wrapping or other purposes, the advertising matter will appear printed thereon at regular inter vals depending upon the size of roll 18.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, there fore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth but wish to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a paper roll and supporting frame, of a bracket adapted to be secured to said frame and provided with lower vertical slots and upper rearwardly curved slots; an impression roll mounted in said bracket; and a casing containing a printing roll and an inking roll and provided with projections adapted to take into said slots, whereby said casing may be temporarily suspended out of operative relation with said impression roll, substantially as described 2. The combination with a paper roll and supporting frame, of a bracket adapted to be secured in said frame and provided with vertical lower slots and upper rearwardly curved slots, sald slots having enlarged upper ends; an impression roll mounted 1n sald bracket; and a casing containing a printing roll and an inking roll, the shafts of said printing and inking rolls being extended and provided with annular grooves at their ends adapted to take into said slots, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a. paper roll and supporting frame, of a bracket adapted to be secured to said frame; an impression roll mounted in said bracket; a casing mounted in said bracketand containing a printing roll and an inking roll, the said inking roll b'elng capable of movement to and from said printing roll; and meansfor ad ustment of "said casing to and from said impression roll,
substantially as described.
4. The con'ibination' with a paper roll and supporting frame, of a bracket comprising lower and upper members provided with clamping means for engagement with the bars with curved slots having enlarged up per ends; and a casing containing a printing roll and an inking roll, the said printing roll being provided with trunnions having annular grooves adapted to operate in the said vertically disposed slots and the said inking roll being provided with trunnions having annular grooves adapted to operate in the said curved slots, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a paper roll and supporting frame, of a bracket comprising lower and upper members provided with clamping means for engagement with the upper cross member of the frame, the said lower member consisting of two rearwardly, outwardly, and downwardly extending bars supporting the impression roll, and the said upper member consisting of two rca avardly, inwardly, and upwardly extending bars, the upward extensions of said last named bars being provided in their lower portions with vertically disposed slots having enlarged upper ends and the upper portions of said bars with "curved slots having enlarged upper ends; and a casing containing a printing roll and an inking roll, the said printing roll being provided with trunnions having annular grooves adapted to operate in the said vertically disposed slots and the said inking roll being provided with trnnnions having annular grooves adapted to operate in the said curved slots, and the said inking roll having vertical play in the said casing as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
