UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEMERT CHALKLEY VAN VOORHIS, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
DUPLEX PENHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,254, dated July 13, 1897.
Application filed March 17, 1897. Serial No. 628,050. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LLnnnnr CHALKLEY VAN VOORHIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pens and penhold- 'ers; and the object thereof is to provide an improved penholder and improved means for carrying two pens in a single holder, together with means for projecting one of said pens and withdrawing the other within the holder.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in both of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved penholder and showing the pens mounted therein, and Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tube 5, which is connected with the usual pen-stock 6, which may be of any desired shape, form, or construction, and in the outer end of the tube 5 and at the upper and lower sides thereof are formed longitudinal slots 7 and S. I also provide two rack-bars 9 and 10,
which are mounted in and adapted to slide in said tube 5, and these rack-bars are adapted to be operated by a pinion l1,which is mounted on a shaft 12, which is supported in said tube, and each of the rack-bars 9 and 10 is provided at its outer end with a head 13, which is segmental in cross-section and into which a pen 14: may be inserted, and the heads 13 are each provided with a headed pin or plug 15,which passes through the correspondin g slots 7 or 8, respectively, and which serve as guides for the heads and the rack-bars with which they are connected.
The shaft 12, on which the pinion 11 is mounted, may be journaled in suitable bearings in the sides of said tube, or the said shaft may be rigidly secured to said tube and the pinion may be made revoluble thereon, and by taking hold of either of the pins 15 the corresponding head and pen may be projected, it being evident that the other head and pen will be drawn into the tube by the same operation.
I also provide each of the rack-bars 9 and 10 at its inner end with a spring 16, one of which is shown in full and the other in dotted lines and in Fig. 1, and these springs are intended to bear upon the sides of the tubular holder, so as to press the rack-bars into contact with the pinion 11, and secured to the shaft 12 at each side of said pinion is a disk 17, between which the rack-bars 9 and 10 are placed and by means of which the rack-bars are held in proper relative position.
One of the pens 14. may be used in connection with black ink and the other in connection with red ink, or said pens may be of different character or form, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent i The herein-described penholdcr comprising a tube 5, having slots 7 and 8, pen-stock 6, two rack-bars 9 and 10, pinion 11, mounted on a shaft 12, said rack-bars being each provided with a head 13, each of which is provided with a pin 15; springs 16, and disks 17, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 1st day of March, 1897.
LEMERT CHALKLEY VAN VOORHIS.
