UNITED' STATESv PATENT OFFICE..
CHRISTOPHER STOOKMANN. or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110.362.404, dated May 3, 1887.
Application nieu Oember a, 1ers.
To- @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER STOCK- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Pens, Pencils, and the Like, of which the following is aspecication'. l
The object of this invention is to provide a holder by which two pens, pencils, or the like can be combined. This obj ect is accomplished ing specification and claims, and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawingsin which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a holder containing myinvention, the holder Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the holder, the pens being in an open position, or ready for use. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the holder, partly in secon. Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The letter A indicates the holder, consisting of a tube oi; suitable material, such as hard rubber. The holderis provided with a stop, B. The stop may consist ofone or more disks of suitable material, I prefer to form the `stop integral with the holder A, and to place washers C C against the stop B. Said washers C G are formedof suitable material, such as soft rubber.
In the drawings the holder is shown as being provided with two stylographic pens, D E. The fountain-pens may be provided with 3,5 di'erent kinds or colors of ink, if desired.
4o pens.
to prevent exhaustion orfcoinpressiou of air When the'pens D E are closed into the holder 'A, as shown in Fig. 1, the points of the pens `rest against the cushions or washers C C, thus preventing any ink from flowing out of the When in an open position or ready for use, as the pen E in Fig. 2, the holder A can be used as a' handle to facilitate the grasping Vof the pen. 4 The holder A is provided with openings F,
in said holder. For example, in Fig. 1, if one of the pens is withdrawn from the holder, the vacuum or partial vacuum which would be caused in the holder A if no holes F 'were 5o formed .would tend to draw air and ink out of the fountain-pen, by which a soiling might occur; also on the insertionof the pen-points When used as shown in4 such as soft rubber; but
consisting of a tube or a stop, B, and cushions or washersC C, sub- Serlal No. 215,696. (No model.)
into the holder the compression of air. which would occur if no holes F were formed would tend to force vink into the air-tubes G Vin said pens, which might interfere with convenient operation and handling of thepens. By providing the air-holes F such compression and exhaustion of air areavoided. Y
The fountain-pens maybe of any construction desired, or in place of fountain-pens-the holder may be used' for stylographic pens, pencils, knives, or various kinds of pens besides fountain-pens. When closed into the holder, asseen in Fig. 1, the pens can be conveniently carried in the pocket. By placing the stop B at the center or near the center of the holder A, as shown in the drawings, the holder will be balanced/or nearly balanced.
Fig. 1, the holder of a holder and of When'the pens serves the double purpose a cap for stylographic pens. are inserted into the holder, as shown in said Fig. 1, so that the shoulders H on the pens D E abut against the holder, then the cushions C close the mouths of said pens and prevent spilling or outflow of the contents of the pen through the point or mouth.
What I claim as new, and desireby Letters Patent, is-
1. A holder for pens, pencils, and the like, body, A, provided with to secure stantially as set forth. I
2. A holdei` for pens, pencils, and the like, consisting of a tube or body, A, provided with a stop, B, and opening F, sibstantially as set forth.
3. A holder for pens, pencils, and the like, consisting of a tube or body, A, provided with a stop, B, cushions or washers C G, and opening F, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the pens D E and the shoulders H, of a holder, A, and cushions C C, formed in said holder, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER S'lOUKMANN. [13.9.]
