UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GAMILLUS M. JOHNSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINATION WRITING INSTRUMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,179, dated August 15, 1876; application filed June 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OAMILLUs M. J oHNsoN, of New York city, have invented an Improved Combination riting Instrument, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, neat, and convenient implement which shall combine several of the most commonlyused instruments in one and the same article. To this end I form an instrument in which is combined a pen and pencil, rubber and knife, or eraser, arranged and combined as hereinafter shown, the whole forming a single implement, as represented in the annexed drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent the implement in two of its different forms, respectively, as a pen and pencil, with the parts in position for use and Fig. 3 is a view showing thesectionsof the implement separated.
As shown in the drawings, and more par ticularly in Fig. 3, the implement consists of three sections, of which A is the central section, forming the handle or body of the implement, and which consists of a simple tube, open at each end, and having two or more beads raised thereupon for ornamental efi'ect, which tube, together with the other sections B O, I-prefer to construct of thin metal plated with nickle or other brilliant and durable metal. Into each end of the tube A the sections B O are adapted to tightly fit, a bead, b 0, being raised at about the center of each of the sections, forming stops, which rest against the mouths of the tubeA, and limit the insertion of the sections therein.
The section B carries a pen, a, and pencil d, which project, respectively, from either extremity, and either end of the section is capable of being socketed in the end of the tube A, leaving either pen or pencil projecting for use.
The section 0 is provided with a rubber, f, and a blade or knife, g, which project from the respective ends thereof, which, like the former section, is reversible with respect to the tube so that either end may be socketed within the tube, leaving the required instrument protrudlng.
The blade is formed, preferably, with two edges, one of which is designed for the ordinary uses of a knife-such as pencil-sharpening, nail-cutting, &c.-while the other is adapted for an eraser. Near the connection of the knife with the section 0, a recess is made in the blade so as to form a sharp-edged hook or claw, k, which is adapted for an envelope-opener, thread-cutter, 850., a groove, z', being formed in the end of the shank, in line with the hook, through which the corner or edge of the envelope is guided to the cuttinghook, as seen in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. l.
The pencil portion of the instrument may be constructed with a tubular shank to receive a short section of a common pencil, as represented in Fig. 3; but it is considered preferable to construct this part of the instrument on the principle of the artists pencil, with screw-point, 850., as represented in Fig. 2. I thus combine, in a neat and very compact manner, a number of the most commonly-used instruments required by almost every individual, and essential to the writer, the whole forming one simple and convenient implement, which, while fully capable at the desk of all the duties of several separate and comparatively expensive instruments, is specially adapted for a portable instrument, as, when the sections are so arranged that the pencil and rubber only project, as shown in Fig. 2, the implement can be readily carried in the pocket, a number of necessary instruments being thus always at hand when required.
What I claim as my invention is- A combination writing instrument, composed of a central tubular body,A, open at each end, in combination with two removable andreversible end sections, B O, fitting into each end of the body A, and having their respective extremities provided with pen and pencil, knife and rubber, substantially as herein shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
G. M. JOHNSON.
