HARVEY LONGENECKER AND FRANK LONGENECKER, or BEAMSVILLE, onto.
, DUPLEX PENHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,989, dated. July 31, 1900.
Application filed April 9, 1900.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that We,HARVEY LONG-ENECKER and FRANK LONGENEOKER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Beamsville, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Duplex Penholder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to penholders in which the case contains two movable pen-sockets so arranged that when one is projected the other is retracted.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved duplex penholder having a simple mechanism which permits a ready projection of one pen-socket and at the same time causes a retraction of the other pensocket to enable the penman to make use of separate pens for different inks and without one pen interfering with the other.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as
Will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims;
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3is a similarviewof the same with one pen-socket projected and the other retracted. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one pen'socket, and Fig. 5 is a like view of the other pen-socket.
The case or body A of the duplex penholder is made hollow and is closed by a cap A,'and in said case are mounted to slide longitudinally two pen-sockets B 0, arranged to carry pens D D of theusual construction. A stopscrew E engages the uppermost pen-socketB and extends through an elongated slot A in the casing A, so as to allow the operator to move the pen-socket B longitudinally and at the same time limit the longitudinal sliding movement thereof. The rear ends of the pensockets B and C are formed with nuts 13 C, respectively, of which the nut B engages the right hand thread F of a screw-rod F,mounted to turn at its rear end in a suitable socket G, carried by the fixed cap A. The Other nut Serial No. 12,094. (No model) (11 engages the left=hand thread F of the screwrod F, so that when the operator imparts a forward movement to the stop-screw E, and consequently to the pen-socket B, then the nut B turns the screw-rod F, and the latter thereby causes the nut O to travel rearward on the threads F whereby the pen socket Cl is retracted. WVhen the operator moves the stop-screw E rearwardly, then the pen-socket B is retracted, and in doing so causes a turning of the screw-rod F in a reverse direction to cause the nut O to travel forward on the threads F whereby the pen-socket O is projected. Thus it will be seen that when movement is given to one pen-socket in one direction the other pen-socket is moved in an opposite direction. By the arrangement described the two' pen-sockets B and O are mounted to slide one upon the other and preferably for this purpose are made semicircular in cross-section, as indicated in Figs. 4: and 5. By this arrangement the operator can project either of the pens D or D without one pen interfering with the other to allow the use of difierent inks on the pens or to use the pens for other purposes.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patentl. A penholder, comprising a case, a right and left hand screw-rod mounted in said case, and pen-sockets engaging the right and left hand threads of the screw-rod respectively, whereby when one socket is moved in one di rection the other is caused to travel in an opposite direction, substantially as shown and described.
2. A penholder, comprising a case, a right and left hand screw-rod mounted to turn in said case, and pen-sockets mounted to slide in the case and engaging the right-hand and left-hand threads of the screw-rod respecti vely, whereby when one pen -socket is moved in one direction the screw-rod is turned and the other pen-socket is caused to travel in an opposite direction, substantially as shown and described. V
3. A penholder, comprising a case, a right and left hand screw-rod mounted to turn in said case, pen-sockets mounted to slide lon gitudinally in said case, and a nut in each socket, one nut engaging the righthand thread of the screw-rod and the other nut en= gaging the left-hand thread of said screw-rod,
substantially as shown anddescribed. V
4. A penholder, comprising a case, a right and left hand screw-rod mounted to'turn in said case, pen-sockets mounted to slide 10ngitudi'nally in said case, a nut in each socket, 7
one nut engaging the right-hand thread of the screw-rod and the other nut engagingthe left-hand thread of said screw-rod,and means, as set forth, and connected with one of the Y pen-soekets to allow of moving the same in either direction.'
7 In testimony whereof we havesigned our names to this specification in the presence of I 5 two'subscribing witnesses.
