Be it known that I, ABRAHAM POLLAK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Lead- Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in mechanical lead pencils, and consists in the novel -features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The lead pencil of my invention comprises an outer barrel portion, a head on the outer end thereof, a conical tip on the inner end thereof, an internally threaded nut within the inner end portion of said tip, a longitudinally movable screw engaged by said nut and having a point to engage the inner end of the lead and at its opposite end a guiding head, a sleeve of special construction within the outer barrel of the pencil and affording spaces to receive leads and also guides for the head on the screw, and a clutch sleeve within the tip member of the pencil, adapted to receive the lead and to grip the same when the lead is propelled forwardly for writing purposes. The outer barrel of the pencil and the tip portion thereofv are relativelyrotatable, one being held stationaryl while the other is rotated for effecting the travel out- 'wardly or inwardly of the confined screw.
The several parts of the lead pencil have.
special features of advantage both as to operation, manufacture and assembly. The main object of the invention is to produce a new construction of mechanical lead pencil which shall be entirely efficientA and properly withstand the usual treatment to which lead pencils are subjected.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawings, 15 designates the exterior plain tubular barrel of the pencil, 16 the tip member at one end of said barrel, and 17 an ornamentalV head at the other end of the barrel carrying a tube 18 which may be slid within the barrel 15, as shown in Fig. 1, and
is adapted to hold leads in reserve and also anA eraser 19 whose end will Vproject outwardly beyond the tube 18, as shown. I will make use of the tube 18 only when the pencil is to be of sufficient length to permit me to do so, and on other occasions the tube 18 will be omitted and the barrel 15 will be shortened accordingly, and the head 17 will .be applied upon the outer endl of the shortened barrel.
The tip-member 16 has a reduced inner end portion 20 which enters .the barrel 15 and'also an internally threaded section 21 which receives a nut 22 screwed into said section 21, said nut 22 having an interior threaded bore and also, at its forward end, a cen` tral recess 23 which is in effect an enlargement of said bore. The tip-member 16 has' the usual opening for the piece of marking lead 24 and contains a'clutch-tube or sleeve 25 separately shown in Figs. 7 and 8 and which is tapered, at its forward end, as at 26, to engage the inner tapered walls of the tip-member A16, and at-its rear end said clutch-tube or sleeve 25 is entered within the recess 23 of the nut 22. The clutch-tube or sleeve 25 is in one continuous piece and at its forward tapered end is slotted, as
shown in Figs. 7 and 8, to afford gripping SAMUEL KANNER, OF NEW a lon U-shaped section 28 between the sides of w ich and the lsides of the sleeve are formed chambers 29 which may be utilized as reservoirs for holding leads, the formation of the sleeve 27 beingmore particularly shown in Fi 2 and 6. The sleeve 27 is bifurcated at lts forward end, as at 30 (F ig. 6), to form two side members which are concavel'V grooved, as at 31, and are adapted to ave a limited sprin action adapting them to return to their initial position when they are sprung outwardly in a direction from each other. The sleeve 27 is formed from a sheet of metal bent to the form indicated in Fig. 2 and the edges of said sheet metal are separated or spaced apart adjacent to thev U-shaped section 28, and at the rear end of said section 28 the material of the sleeve is cut and bent to forminwardly extending fingers 32 which overlap each other and cross one edge of the space between the two sides of the sectionl 28 so as to form a stop at the rear end of said sleeve. 27 for arresting the head 33 secured on the rear end of the screw 34 when said screw is worked inwardly to the full limit of its movement. The. forward members of the sleeve 27, and which for convenience I will number 35, are adapted to be sprung upon the threaded section 21 of the tip-member 16, which tii-melnber is formed at the forward 'end o said section 21 with an annular groove 36 adapted to receive the inwardly pressed or concaved 4 portions 31 of the members 35, as shown in Fig. 1. The pressure of the members 35 against the tip-member 16 and the engagement of the grooved forward ends of said members 35 with the annular groove 36 of said tip-member serve to lock the tip-member and sleeve 27 in proper end relation to each other. The tip-member 16 is formed with an annular shoulder 37 which abuts against the forward edge of the barrel 15.
The worm or screw 34 carries the transversely elongated head 33 at its rear end and at its forward portion is within the cooperating nut 22 and has a lain forward rod member 38 of about the diameter of the lead 24 and adapted, at the proper time, to propel the lead through the clutch sleeve 25 and tip-member 16, as will-be understood on reference to Fi 1. The screw 34 engages the interior t read of the nut 22 and at its forward portion passes freely within the rear end of the clutch-sleeve 25. The elongated head `33 on the rearend of the screw 34 lies between the sides of the U- shaped section 28 of the sleeve 27 and said The nut 22 when screwed home within the rear end of the Itip-member 16 -lwecome rigid, and hence when the screw 34 is caused to rotate b the turning of the barrel 15, said screw 1s compelled to travel in one direction or the other in accordance with the direction of rotation of said barrel. The sleeve 27 so tightly fits the barrel 15 that it will rotate therewith, and therefore when the barrel is rotated, the rotation of the sleeve causes the sides of the U-shaped section 28 to act through the elongated head 33 and turn or rotate the screw 34.
When the parts are assembled in the relation shown in Fig. 1, the forward endof the barrel rl5 covers over the sleeve members 35 and the ad'acent portions of the tipmember 16 an in this assembled relation the tip-member 16 cannot be pulled out from the remaining portion of the pencil, since at that time the walls of the forward end of the barrel 15 will prevent the inwardly recessed lportions 31 of the sleeve 27 from coming out of the annular groove 36 of the ti `member 16. The sleeve 27 when rotate by the barrel 15 may turn upon the inner or rea-r end of the tip-member 16, while said member is held stationary, the groove-portions 3l of the sleeve 27 then turning within and around the annular groove 36 of said ti -member.
The lead 24 will e inserted into the forward end of the tip-member 16 and into the clutch-tube or sleeve 25 by hand, the screw 34 having previously been caused to recede rearwardly by the rotation of Vthe barrel 15 and sleeve 27. When it is desired to project the lead 24 for writing purposes, the user will hold the y'tip-member 16, in, sa the left hand and with the right han rotate the barrel 15 in a direction to cause the screw 34 to move forwardly against the lead and project the same to the desired extent. After the use of the pencil for writing purposes has ceased, the writer will holdthe tip-member 16 stationary and reversely rotate the barrel 15 for retractin the screw 34, and thereupon the writer wi l push the lead 24 back into the tip-member 16 and clutch-sleeve 25 by hand. If the user should prefer he may actuate the screw 34 by holding the barrel 15 stationary and rotating the tip-member 16 and with it the nut 22, to cause a direct traveling action in the screw ,34, but ordinarily the method of operation would be to hold the tip-member stationary androtate the'barrel 15.
-then the forward endof the sleeve 27 will be passed upon and engaged with'the rear end of the tip-member, the forward end of the U-section 28 affording a stop to abut against the tip-'member and arrest the sleeve when it has reached its proper position on the tipmember, and thereupon the sleeve 27 and the rear end .of the tip-member will be v pushed into the barrel 15. The sleeve 27 is slightly contraqtible around its circumference due to its opposite edges being spaced from the curved part of the section 28 (Fig. 2), and hence may be squeezed into the barrel 15, which the sleeve will tightly bind. The formation of the sleeve 27 is shown in Figs. 2 and 6, in which it may be noticed that the sleeve has two extended se ental sides to engage with a spring action the walls of the barrel 15 and the inner U- shaped section 28 whose sides aid in keeping said segmental sides firmly against said walls while at the same time serving as means to turn and guide the head 33 and create, with said segmental sides, pockets 29 which ma if desired, be utilized to hold reserve lea s.
In the operation of the sleeve or tube 25 performs special duties.

. said tube is thus capable vof a limited sliding action 'which results in the following conditions: When the screw -34 is in its rear position and a piece of lead 24 is introduced 'fas tip-member whose rear end to the tube 25 through the front end of the tip-member, the lead moving against the tube will slide the same rearwardly as far as the end of the recess 23 will rmit and this affords freedom to the clutc -fin rs at the front end of the tube and the inward movement of the lead is thereby facilitated, and when the rod 38 of the screw 34 is moved forwardly against the lead to project the saine` for writing purposes, the forward pressurev exerted by that act against the tube 25 drives the ta ered end of the tube against the adjacent wa ls of the tip-member 16 with the result that the lead becomes firmly clutched and incapable of any axial rotation during its use for writing purposes.
What I claim as m invention and desire to secure by Letters atent, is:
1. In a pencil, an exterior barrela hollow rtion is within'theforward end of said' barrel and provided with an annular groove, a lo 'tudinal sleeve within said barrel and aving forwardly projecting arms engaging the sides pencil the clutch- `of the rear end of said tip-member and formed with depressions to lie within said annular groove, an internally threaded nut confined within said tip-member, a clutchsleeve for leads withinsaid tip member, a
longitudinal screw-passing through said nut and entering said clutch-sleeve fbr projecting the lead therefrom, and means within said sleeve for guiding said screw and holding the same against rotation except therefor rotating said screw.
2. In a pencil, an exterior barrel, a hollow tip-member whose rear end portion is within the forward end of said barrel and provided with an annular groove, a longitudinal sleeve within said barrel andhaving forwardly projecting arms engaging the sides of the rear end of said tip-member and formed with depressions to lie within said annular groove, an internally threaded nut confined within saidl tip-member, a clutchsleeve for leads within said tip-member, a longitudinal screw-passing through said nut and entering said clutch-sleeve for projecting the lead therefrom, means 'slidably connecting the screw with said sleeve and means for rotating said sleeve andl therewith said screw.
3. In a pencil, an exterior barrel, a hollow tip-member whose rear end portion is within the forward end of said barrel and provided with an annular groove, a longitudinal sleeve within saidy barrel and having forwardly projecting arms engaging the sides of the rear end 'of said tip-member and formed .with depressions to lie within said annular groove, an internally threaded nut confined within said tip-member, a clutchsleeve for leads within said tip-member, a longitudinal screw-passing through said nut and entering said clutch-sleeve for projecting the lead therefrom and having a laterally projecting head on its inner end and a smooth rod on its forward end to engage the lead, means on said sleeve engagin said head and adapted on the rotation o said sleeve to rotate said head and therewith said screw, and means for rotating said sleeve.A

In a pencil, an exterior barrel, a hollow tip-member whose rear end portion is within the forward end of said barrel and provided with an annular groove, a longitudinal sleeve within said barrel and hav-y ing forwardly projecting arms engaging the sides of the rear end of said tip-member and formed with depressions to lie within end engages the inner walls of the forward end of said tip-member and whose rear end is supported and centered by lsaid nut, a.

7. In a pencil, an exterior barrel, a hollow tip-member connected therewith having inwardly contracted inner surfaces at its forward end and a fixed member'l at its rear end containing anopening for a screw-rod" and concentric therewith a shallow recess, a clutch-tube having a tapered slotted for-l ward lend adaptedto 'said surfaces of the tip-member and its rear end. supported freely in said recess, whereby' said tube is l rendered capable of limited sliding movement, a screw-rod operable through said fixed member'and -within said tube for projecting the marking lead', and means Afor effecting the longitudinal-travel of said rod.
8. In a pencil, an exterior barrel, a hollow tip-member whose` rear end is within the forward end of said barrel and around which said barrel is rotatable, a longitu dinal sleeve within said barrel and tightly engaging the same and interlocked with the rear end of said tip-member and rotatable with said barrel around the same, an internally threaded nut at the rear end of said tip-member and rigid therewith, a clutch-tube for leads within said tip-member, and a longitudinal screw-rod .passing through said nut and entering said clutch- V'tube for'projecting the lead therefrom and having a head on its rear end,.said sleeve being formedl of sheet metall and having segmental sides engaging the inner walls lof said barrel and a transverse U-shaped section between which and said sides are formed pockets and between the sides of which section the head of said screw-rod is confined and guided, and the longitudinal edges of said segmentalsides-being spaced apart to allow a spring action in said sides against .the inner walls of said barrel.
