Erasers; pencil holders.-A pencil holder, of the type in which nut-and-screw lead-propelling mechanism is operated by the rotation of a tipmember relatively to the barrel, comprises a barrel 15, Fig. 1, serving as a handle, a hollow tip-member 16 rotatably held within the forward end of the barrel 15 and carrying an internallythreaded nut 22, a lead-holding clutch-tube 25 centred by the nut 22 and engaging at its forward end the inner walls of the member 16, and a screw-rod 34 engaging the nut 22, having a forward extension 38 bearing on the lead 24, and slidably guided within the barrel 15, so that the extension 38 is advanced or retracted by relative rotation of the member 16 and barrel 15. The tube 25 is provided with a tapered and slotted forward extremity co-operating with the tapered inner wall of the member 16 and has a limited sliding motion relatively to the member 16, forwardly to grip the lead when the lead is propelled by the extension 38 and backwardly to release the lead when the lead is retracted or to permit of the introduction of a fresh lead into the tube 25. The guide preventing the rotation of the rod 34 relatively to the barrel 15 may comprise a sleeve 27 fitting tightly within the barrel 15 and having forwardly-projecting arms 35 with depressions 31 engaging an annular recess in the member 16 so that the member 16 can be rotated relatively to, but cannot be withdrawn from, the sleeve 27 and barrel 15. The screw 34 has a flat head 33, Figs. 1 and 2, slidably guided by the sleeve 27, preferably by the side walls of a V-shaped channel 28, Fig. 2, in the sleeve 27. pockets 29 for spare leads being then provided between the walls of the channel 28 and the outer walls of the sleeve 27. The rear end of the barrel 15 may be closed by an ornamental cap 17, Fig. 1, provided with a projecting eraser 19 and with a receptacle 18 for spare leads.
