Abstract

191,901. Marks, E. C. R., (Wahl Co.). Nov. 22, 1921. Pencil - holders; erasers.- In a pencil-holder of the screw-propelling type, the movement of the follower-rod is controlled by a member normally in engagement with, but releasable from the rod to permit free gravity movement thereof. Fixed in the rear end of the lower section A of the pencil case is a shell 3 formed with a projection 4 which screws into a shell 14 fixed in the section B of the case. The conical end of the section A is provided with a filling-member 10 into which screws a tip 2 and which serves as a bearing for the forward end of the lead tube 9, the rear end thereof extending into the bore of the projection 4. The tube 9 is forced against the tip 2, to prevent the easy removal thereof, by a spring 13 acting against a shoulder on the tube. The shell 3 is apertured at 8 to enable spare leads to be inserted into the section A. Fixed in the shell 14 is a controlling-member 7, Fig. 9, for the followerrod 6, the forward end of the member 7 being internally screw-threaded and split at 17 to provide spring jaws which are held together, so that the screw-threads engage the rod 6, by being inserted in the bore of the projection 4. The rod 6 is connected to a member 28 formed with an irregular outline engaged by corrugations in a tube 18 fixed in the rear section C of the case and extending into the section B, relatively to which it is adjustable to a limited extent. A member 19, provided with spring arms having inwardly-projecting fingers engaging slots 20 in the tube 18, is mounted between the tube and the walls of the section B and, when drawn out, engages a ring 21 mounted at the rear end of the section B to prevent entire separation of the parts. An eraser is held against flanges 26 on the, tube 18 by flanges 27 on the section C. To insert a new lead, the sections A and B are disconnected so that the jaws of the member 7 are allowed to spring apart to release the rod 6. A lead is inserted in the tube 9 and the rod 6 is allowed to fall into the tube until it contacts with the lead, when the two sections are screwed together, this being facilitated by the formation of bevelled surfaces on the jaws of the member 7 and at the entrance, of the bore of the projection 4. When the screw threads of the jaws grip the rod 6, further forward movement thereof is only possibly on rotation of the section C.
