Abstract

24,035. Keeran, C. R. Dec. 14. Pencil-holders.-Relates to pencil-holders of the kind in which the lead is pushed out by a follower upon rotation of the same within a stationary outer member. (1) The follower is rotated by a member which at any time is withdrawable from the stationary member to an extent which indicates the length of lead remaining in the pencil. As shown, the follower 6 is provided with a head 5 engaging the threaded surface 4 of the inner casing 3 and rotated by a chambered structure consisting of members 8, which embrace the head 5 and are attached to a thimble 9, on which screws a cap 11. The members 8 are provided at the forward end with a tube 12 to guide the lead, and the parts are so arranged that, when the lead is used up and the stem 6 approaches the outer end of the pencil, the head 5 is adjacent the tube 12. At any time, therefore, the distance the cap 11 can be withdrawn before the tube 12 abuts against the head 5 indicates the length of lead remaining in the pencil. The members 8 project through the thimble 9 and thus form magazines for reserve leads 10. The inner casing 3 serves to reinforce the outer shell 1, which may be of precious metal. In a modification, a single member 8 of the horseshoe shape is used, the head 5 being correspondingly modified. (2) The lead is fed through a tip 15 having a part bored to approximately the size of the lead and provided with sharp-edged inwardly-directed ribs 18 adapted to bite into and steady the lead,
