A writing instrument, particularly a ball-point pen, comprises a barrel in one or more parts, the wall thereof having a stiffness sufficient for use in writing, and rigid writing medium carrier mounted for longitudinal displacement against the influence of a retracting spring, the wall of the barrel being wholly or partly bendable by transverse pressure on the barrel and provided with parts which, on bending the barrel, cause longitudinal displacement of the carrier. A ball-point pen has a barrel comprising parts 1 and 2, Fig. 1, of resilient material, e.g., a polyamide, the parts 1 and 2 being connected by a screw threaded sleeve 3 having an internal flange 4. A rigid tube 8 having a conical projection 9 carries a ball-point pen unit 11 which engages an annular depression 12 in the tube 8. A flange 16 carried on a toothed sleeve 20, rotates on the rear end of the tube 8 loosely engages the bore 15 in the barrel part 2. A spring 17 engages a flange 18 on the unit 11 and a slidable sleeve 19 to hold the unit in retracted position. On bending the barrel, by the application of pressure in the direction of the arrows 5, 6 and 7, the flange 4 displaces the unit 11 in the direction of the arrow 10 into writing position. The unit 11 is retained in writing position by a locking device comprising the toothed sleeve 20 displaceable between projections 21 and 22. The sleeve 20 has two saw teeth 23 on its front end and saw-teeth 24, 25 and a slot 26 on its rear end. During forward displacement of unit 11 an inclined surface on the projection 21 effects rotation of the sleeve 20 through half a tooth pitch. Release of pressure on the barrel causes spring 17 to retract the tube 8 and sleeve 20, such that the sleeve is rotated further by projection 22 engaging the teeth 24 ; the unit is then held in writing position with projection 22 engaging the space 28 between the teeth 24, 25. Further bending and then release of the barrel causes further rotation of the sleeve 20, such that the projection 22 engages the slot 26 to hold the unit 11 in retracted position. In a modification, a propelling pencil has a barrel comprising parts 31, 32, Fig. 4, the part 31 having a metal lining 33 which houses a lead guide tube 35 having clamping jaws 36. The tube 35 has a lead magazine 37 extended by a rod 38 guided by a sleeve 34. On application of pressure in the direction of the arrows 42, the barrel bends such that a conical bore 40 displaces a sleeve 39 forwardly, thus allowing.the jaws 36 to open. Release of pressure on the barrel causes a spring 41 to retract the tube 35 and jaws 36 into the barrel. In a further modification, Fig. 5, (not shown) the rear part only of a ball-point pen barrel is resilient, while the pen unit carries a spike which slides down a conical recess on bending the barrel. In further modifications, Figs. 6 to 11 (not shown), pen units or lead guide tubes are tiltably mounted and engage cam surfaces or grasses in the rear ends of the barrels which effect projection and back the units or tubes in projected position.
