Abstract
679,264. Pencil holders. FRICK, W. Sept. 16, 1949, No, 23892/49. Class 146 (iii). A propelling pencil is combined with a lead sharpener, such that by alternate depression and release of a spring-loaded push button at the rear end of the pencil the lead is sharpened by the sharpener which is in the form of a grinding attachment provided in the front end of the pencil casing. The pencil casing comprises sleeves 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, in which a lining tube 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, is secured by screws 5, 6 and 7. A push button 8 carries a lead-guiding tube 9, 9' axially slidable in a ring 11 abutting a collar 12 in the lining tube. The front end of the part 9' of the lead-guiding tube forms a cone 14 which cooperates with a clamping-ring 15 pressed forwards by a spring 17 to clamp a lead 28. Depression of the button 8 causes the ring 15 to abut the tip 2 of the pencil, such that the lead is released to fall under gravity to a projected position. Two grinding jaws 19 forming an angle of about 60 degrees with one another are secured to a plate spring 18 clamped between the lining tube 4 and the pencil casing, while a support 20 projecting between the jaws 19 supports the lead during grinding. During grinding the lead is simultaneously reciprocated axially and rotated by depression and release of the button 8 which carries pins 23, 23<SP>1</SP> engaging suitable helical cam slots such as 21, 21<SP>1</SP> in the tube 4 for this purpose. The button 8 may be retained in a forward position, such that the lead is held projected for writing by reason of the pins 23, 23<SP>1</SP> engaging slots 27 laterally offset from longitudinal slots 24. In a modification, a cam sleeve having a curved slot, is loosely mounted on the lead grinding tube while being engaged by a guide screw secured to the pencil casing, such that rotation of the sleeve caused by axial movement of the push button is transmitted to the grinding tube through teeth on the rear ends of the sleeve which engage similar teeth on a ring secured to the grinding tube.
