[Class 146 (iii)] In a propelling pencil having a retractable lead, clamping jaws 17 co-operate with a clamping tube 12 fixed to a presser tube 7 actuated by on operating knob 9. The jaws 17 are carried by a tube secured to the bottom 20 of a lead receptacle 19, said bottom being provided with a pin 21 which projects through two diametrically opposite longitudinal slots 13<SP>1</SP> and 13<SP>11</SP> in the presser tube 7 and into two corresponding slots 61 and 611 in a guide tube 2. In the writing position as shown in Fig. 1, the lead is gripped by the jaws 17 clamped by the tube 12 which is held in a projected position by clamping jaws 4 which engage behind a ring 16 fixed to the tube 12. To retract the lead the knob 9 is depressed as far as possible so that a ring 15 slidable on the sleeve 12 presses the jaws 4 apart to allow the ring 16 to pass between them when the knob 9 is released. The pin 21 urged rearwardly by a spring 22 is arrested by the rear ends of the slots 61 and 611 while the presser tube 7 continues to be retracted by a spring 25 thus causing the tube 12 to release the jaws 17 which previously gripped the lead during the first part of the return stroke of the knob 9.
