Abstract
494,932. Pencil holders. FEND, G., FEND, H., and JAISSLE, C. Jan. 13, 1938, Nos. 1159 and 1160. Convention dates, April 29, 1937 and Oct. 13, 1937. [Class 146 (iii)] In order to avoid the effects of the retraction of the lead during the final part of the movement of the gripping-member in a pencil holder of the kind having a step-by-step feed, a spring- retracted gripper is provided in the point-section and is adapted to be pushed forward by the gripping-member, but on the return is only retracted at the end of the movement of the gripping-member to the extent that the gripping-member carries back with it the lead which it has gripped. To feed a lead forward, the magazine tube 47 is depressed and carries with it a forked member 49 slidable in slots in a tube 14 and on a narrowed part 38 of a gripping-member 35. The lower end of the member 35 is split to form jaws which are under the control of a ring 13 slidable within limits in a member 6. The member 6 is formed with four sectors of approximately 90 extent, two of which are of larger diameter and are screwed into the lower end of a tube 3 secured in the casing, and two of which, of smaller diameter, serve as guides for the slotted and restricted lower end of the tube 14, this end being secured to the pointsection 2. When the member 49 strikes the shoulder 39 on the member 35, the latter is moved forward carrying with it the ring 13 and lead 52 until the ring is stopped to cause the lead to be released. The separation of the jaws of the member 35 is assisted by the penetration of the conical end of a spring-pressed lead-holding tube 24 movable in a tube 22 secured to the tube 14. The fork member 49 then engages the ends of the slots in the tube 14 and forces it forward together with the point-section, this carrying with it the stub end 31 of a lead therein and permitting the lead 52 to fall. On release of the pressure, the springs 44, 46 return the gripping-member and magazine tube to normal position. The gripping-member will grip the lead 52 when the ring 13 is arrested, and will carry it rearwardly. The fork member 49 will then engage the ends of the slots in the tube 14 and retract it with the point-section a distance equal to that which the lead was retracted by the gripper, so that the stub 31 will rest on the lead 52. In a modification, the main point-section is secured to the tube 3 and a subsidiary section having a slotted conical end adapted to be drawn into the main section is attached to the tube 14. In a further modification, the springs 44, 46 are replaced by a single spring.
