Abstract

621,809. Propelling pencils. SCRIPTO, Inc. Sept. 3, 1946, No. 26435. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1945. [Class 146 (iii)] A push feed mechanical pencil comprises a point-section having a lead enclosing opening, clutch means housed in and relatively reciprocal to the point-section, stop means movable to obstruct the opening at a point a fixed distance from the desired position of the lead, means to retract the the clutch and lead to a point above the stop means, the lead being then released from the clutch simultaneously with the stop means moving to obstructing position and upon reversal of the reciprocating movement, the removal of the stop means being synchronised with the clutch means grasping the lead and moving it to writing position. An outer barrel 10 houses an inner tube 16 which is secured to a cap 14 and a spring 12 lies between the cap 14 and a shoulder 13 in the barrel 10. The clutch 21 with slots 22 is biassed to expand and has recesses 21a by which it is secured to the barrel 10 by indentations 28, on a sleeve 29, which pass through slots 19 in the tube 16. The point-section 17 with slot 20 is biassed to contract and is screwed onto the end of tube 16 and moved downwards therewith against the action of the spring 12 by pressure on the cap 14. As the point section 17 is moved downwards, the lead 34 and clutch 21 remain stationary through the depth " A " of the cylindrical inner surface 24 and then the clutch expands into the enlarged space above and the jaws of the pointsection contract behind the lead which will rest on shoulders 35 inside the point-section. As the cap 14 is released, the clutch 21 grips the lead, the jaws of the point-section open and the lead is fed forward the distance " A ". The inner space of the tube 16 may be utilised as a magazine for spare leads which can slide down a conical surface 36 of the clutch 21 to give continuous lead feed. The top of the tube 16 may be closed by an eraser.
