Abstract
406,451. Pencil holders. LEISTENSCHNEIDER, A., 5, L³tzowstrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany. Dec. 19, 1932, No. 35973. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1931. [Class 146 (iii).] In a propelling pencil of the kind comprising an internal lead-carrying tube which is adapted to be pressed forwardly by hand and returned by spring pressure, and a clamping-device carried by the tube and adapted to be closed to grip the lead during the forward movement of the tube while being released during the return movement thereof, together with a slidable clamping-ring adapted to engage abutments in the pencil casing at each end of its travel, forward movement of the clamping-device relatively to the ring when this is in its forward position causing release of the device, and rearward movement of the device relatively to the ring when this is in its rearward position causing the closing of the device, the clamping- device is loosely suspended from the lead-carrying tube so as to be free to move radially or laterally with respect thereto, when the tube is in its advanced position. The cap 7 is connected to an inner sleeve 3 which serves as a lead reservoir by a spring rim 4 engaging grooves 5, 6 in the cap, and the sleeve 3 is connected through the hollow guide 8 with the movable inner tube 9, the position of these parts being controlled by a helical spring 10, located between the guide 8 and a fixed sleeve 12. The sleeve 12 is formed with resilient lead-engaging tongues 13, and rests upon a sleeve 15, held in position by a projection 16 which is clamped between the barrel 2 and a screwed-on tip 31, 32. The leadclamping device consists of two or more independent longitudinal members 19, 20 which fit at their upper ends in a recess 22 of a sleeve 18, sliding in the sleeve 15, and are held in position between the sleeve 18 and the end of the inner tube 9. The grasping-device is formed at its upper end with funnel-shaped extensions 26, a cylindrical grasping middle part 51, and a lower extension 27, and to press the device together a grasping-ring 28 is provided, having a tubular extension 30 engaging with a grasping-cone 29 over the ends of the members 19, 20. The ring is pressed upwards by a spring 35, the shoulder 16 serving as an upper stop therefor. In operation, the grasping- members 19, 20 and ring 28 are moved downwards by pressing the cap 7 until the ring 28 rests on the stop 36 ; on further downward movement of the cap, the members 19, 20 are pushed out of the ring and thereby released, when th e ring snaps back under the action of the spring 35, leaving the members 19, 20 loose and the lead released but maintained in projected position by the tongues 13 and the spring tongues 50 of the resilient portion 31 of the pencil tip. On releasing the cap, the members return to the position shown in the Figure, and the lead is clamped again by means of the members 19, 20 and the ring 28. The elastic tongues 13 can be opened by pressing the cap down until the surfaces 39 on the tube 9 force the tongues away from the lead. A shoulder 17 on the sleeve 15 serves to prevent the members 19, 20 from being drawn too far into the ring 28 when there is no lead in the pencil, and the projection 36 serves as a front stop to prevent the grasping-members from being so far projected as to strike the part 31.
