Abstract

196,130. Fischer, H. L. Feb. 9, 1922. Pencil-holders.. erasers. - In a pencil-holder of the type in which the propelling- mechanism is formed of separable sections, the parts of the mechanism are held together against relative longitudinal movement by a spring sleeve carried by one of the sections. The propelling - mechanism comprises a screw-threaded member 15, a slotted tube 16 and a lead-carrier 28 formed with a socket 32 for the rear end of the lead and springs ends 29, 30 to force the teeth 31 into engagement with the screw-threads of the member 15. The member 15 is spaced from the barrel 10 to form a receptacle for spare leads by collars 17, 18 secured respectively to the front and rear ends, the collar 18 screwing into the rear end of the barrel. The rear end of the slotted tube 16 is fixed in an operating-head 22 which is formed with an extension, a part 25 of which is knurled to serve as a finger-piece and the other part is recessed to contain a divided spring sleeve 26 accommodated, when the parts are assembled, in a cylindrical recess in the collar 18. The head 22 is provided with an eraser 39 covered by a cap 40 having an oval - shaped shank fitting on the head with greater friction than that exerted between the parts 26, 18, so that, when the cap is pulled outwardly, the tube 16 is drawn out. The forward end of the slot in the tube 16 is closed by lugs to prevent the disengagement of the lead-carrier 28 from the slot, so that, in order to remove the tube 16 from the member 15, it must be rotated to disengage the teeth 31 from the screw-threads. To uncover the eraser, the knurled part 25 of the head 22 is held and the cap 40 pulled off. A bead 42 on the shank of the cap engages a shoulder on the head to prevent jamming. The collar 17 at the forward end of the member 15 is formed with a conical inner surface 45 so that, after the tube 16 has ben removed and the pencil inverted, any broken pieces of lead may be readily discharged from the point section through the member 15.
