My invention relates to mechanical pencils. i
It has for its primary object the provision of a' pencil light in weight,vsimple in construction and economical to manufacture.

This body, or barrel, 1is provid-ed with a continuous, `long ritijidinal extending central bore 2 from end to end, the upper portion being round and the lower part for a portion of its lengthbeing formed triangular in shape as illustrated inFig. 9,*and`ithe extreme lower end being round and smaller .in diameter than the hereV in the upper part barrell of the pencil to accommodate the cylindrical extension of the metal tip illustrated in Fig. 5.

Removablypositioned in the bottom of thelead chamber which is formed by the tube 12 is a disc 18 which is slottedas at 19` to give said `disc a resilient action, and
to hold it in the tube through the medium of said disc expanding against the sidewalls of the tube. The disc is also held from longitudinal movement in the tube through the factthat it rests on .the-shoulders formed in the tube by the swedging of the lower portion thereof to a lesser diameter.
Attached to the upper end of the tube 12 is a corresponding internally threaded cap 2O which is hollowed out'to form a seat for an eraser 21. The'eraser 21 also acts as a plug to prevent extra leads 22 in the hollow interior ofthe tube 12 from falling out when the pencil is inverted. AAs maybe Seen from the v drawings, the extra leads are easily accessible through the medium of removing the eraser from lthe cap, or unscrewing the cap from the tube 12.
The operation of the device is as follows: AA lead is dropped into the open end of the "barrel 1l and it will gravitatedownward into :the lead guide 7 untilit contacts withy the yriflingin the tip 10. Y i Theremovable lead feed unit is next introduced into the aperture in the top ofthe barrel, feed wire first, and is forced therein untilthe threaded cross head engages 'the threads'in Yshell 5. ir f VTheunit is thenturnedin clockwise direction if the threads be right handed, and anticlockwise if the threadsffbey left handed. This will cause the threads'in the'cross head 15 to engage the threads Vin the shell 5 and lforce the cross head and feedwire attached :inadownward direction; The lower end of the feed wire will contact .with Athe upper end of the lead' and thus the lead will be forced through the tip to a ywriting position.
To facilitate the turning of the removable propelling unit a roughenedsurface 23 is formed on the cap; f. In a mechanical pencil, a, barrel having `shell and tip snugly in an opening extending longitudinally therethrough, the opening being substantially circular in cross-section for a portion of its length and non-circular in cross-section for aportion of its length, a combined lead guide and shell of circular cross section, said shell being positioned in the said circular part of the openingr and the lead guide in the non-circular portion of the opening, and means projecting fromsaid circular lead guide and cooperating with said non-circular portion to prevent rotation of the combined lead guide and shell in said handle.

In a mechanical pencil, a barrel having an opening extending longitudinally therethrough, the opening being substantially circular in cross-section for a portiony of its length and non-circular in cross-section for a portion of its length, a combined lead guide and shell, said shell being positioned in the said circular part of the openingand the lead guide in the non-circular portion of the opening, and means on said lead guide cooperatingv with said non-circular portion to prevent rotation of the combined lead guide and shell in said handle, and a tip on ,one end of said handle, said tip having ixedengagement with one end of said lead guide when the parts are in assembled position.;

In a mechanical pencil, a barrel having an openingr extending longitudinallyl'therethrough, the opening being substantially circular in cross-section for a portionfoigits `length and non-circular incross-section for a portion of its lengtha combinedlead guide and shell, saidshell beingpositioned in the said circular partof the openingy and the lead guide in the noncircular portion of the opening, and means on said lead guide cooperating with said non-circular portion to prevent rotation of the combined lead guide and shell in said handle, and means cooperating with said shell to cause advancement of a lead through said lead guide.

In a mechanical pencil, a hollow handle having a shoulder, a hollow shell positioned in the hollow ofsaid handle, a lead guide tube of smaller 'diameter than said shell and fixed thereto'with a shoulder at the juncture between the tube and shell, threads on the free end of said tube, aftip inserted through the smaller end ofvsaid hollow handle and having threads to engage said threads on the tube to draw said shoulder against a co-acting shoulder in the hollowfoic said handle to snugly holdsaid lead guide, shell and tip in placejy 6. In a mechanical pencil, a hollow barrel, a lead guide tube therein having a projection, a portion of the length of said hollow of the barrel being non-circular in cross-sectionto hold said projection and prevent vrotation of said tube with relation to the barrel.

A mechanical pencil' having' a hollow barrelv formed with a round bore and an angular bore, a shell having an internally threaded upper portion and a lower lead guide terminating in a threaded end engaging a threaded tip of the barrel and a removable unit having a slotted lower portion carrying a cross head having a lead plunger, said slotted lower portion being insertable scribed my name.
