Pencil, pen, and like point-protectors. - In a reservoir pen, pencil-holder, or the like, of the kind provided with a longitudinally sliding pointprotecting cap or sheath, connected to the bodv or barrel by a bayonet-slot attachment, provision is made for detaching the sheath from the barrel. The sheath C, Fig. 3, is provided with an inwardly projecting pin V slidable within either of two partly circumferential grooves in the body or barrel, a longitudinal communication groove being provided between them; further, each of the partly circumferential grooves is provided with a split braking- ring to receive the pin V and to hold it against accidental movement. A development of the grooved portion of the barrel is shown in Fig. 6, wherein partly circumferential grooves E, H are connected by a longitudinal groove U. Adjacent to the grooves E, H are shallower grooves D, G, which extend around the circumference of the barrel and carry spring-metal split-rings K, P having claws or projections L, M and Q, R bent inwardly to lie within the grooves E, H. Fig. 5 shows the position of the lower braking-ring P when the sheath is about to be projected to cover the nib of the reservoir pen, the slot S in the ring having been placed in alignment with the longitudinal groove U by twisting the sheath to the right until the claw Q on the ring is in contact with the unreduced portion J at the end of the groove H. To remove the sheath it is rotated to the left when in the projected position, until the claw M on the ring K comes against the abutment F, as shown in Fig. 4, the slot N in the ring then being in alignment with a short longitudinal groove T at the end of the barrel, so that the pin V on the sheath can be pushed forward and released. The sheath may be open at both ends, or the outer end may be closed by a screwthreaded plug W adapted also to screw into the end of the barrel A. The grooves in the barrel may be made of equal depth and the braking-rings adapted therefor; alternatively, the grooves may be arranged within the sheath, and the projecting pin V upon the barrel.
