Abstract

245,284. Pollak, A. Jan. 22, 1925. Pencil holders. - In pencil holders of the type in which a lead-carrying member is pressed forward by hand against the action of a spring and is provided with wedging-means for gripping the lead during the forward stroke to impart a step-by-step feed to the lead, the lead-carrying member is provided with a number of spring members of wedge formation adapted to cooperate with a sleeve and having a longitudinally-extended leadgripping surfaces. Preferably a magazine chamber is provided from which leads are automatically and successively fed to the lead-carrying member. As shown, the lead-carrying member 30 is connected to a member 27 inserted in a magazine tube 26 and provided with a conical portion adapted to direct the leads one at a time to the member 30. The magazine tube is closed at the rear end by an eraser 44 and is frictionally connected to a cap 21 slidable on the end of the outer casing 20. The front end of the lead-carrying member is split to form a number of spring arms 45, the outer sides of which are inclined downwardly and outwardly. A conical sleeve 36 encircles the arms 45 and is movable in a chambered member 35 between a nut 34 and a shoulder 38. In the normal position when the magazine tube is held retracted by a spring 33 interposed between the nut 34 and the member 27, the sleeve 36 is forced down on the arms 45 to cause them to grip the lead. To feed the lead forward, the magazine tube is pushed in and the lead is propelled by the arm 45 under the influence of the sleeve 36 until the latter is arrested by the shoulder 38, when the arms are allowed to spring apart. During the rearward movement, the arms remain free of the lead until the sleeve, which is carried back by the arms, is stopped by the nut 34, when, during the slight further movement of the magazine tube, the arms are caused to grip the lead again. To ensure that the arms release the lead at the end of the forward movement, the rear end of the tip 23, which screws into the front end of the member 35, is provided with a conical end adapted to engage correspondingly-shaped parts at the front ends of the arms. The tip, which serves to lock the mechanism in the casing and to prevent the retraction of the lead during the rearward movement of the magazine tube, is provided with a shoulder adapted to engage the front end of the casing when the tip is screwed into the member 35.
