Glass 146(3) In a writing instrument of the kind in which a writing unit is spring retractable axially in the forward end of the barrel and a plunger is manually displaceable axially of the rear end of the barrel but can be releasably held in an inwardly displaced position to retain the writing tip of the unit in writing position, the plunger carries a detent lever arranged to bear on the rear end of the writing :unit so that axial thrust of the spring, acting through the unit, tends to rock the detent lever into holding engagement with the barrel. As shown, a ball-point pen unit 2 is pressed rearwardly by a spring 5 into engagement with the nose 13 of a lever 12 pivoted at 11 to an axially displaceable plunger 7. The unit 2 has a domed head 14 such that the lever is urged in the direction of the arrow 20. The rear end of the lever 12 has a lateral projection formed with steps 15, 16. The unit 2 is retained in writing position by engagement of the step 15 with the upper edge - of a hole 17 in the one-piece barrel 1 and in retracted position by engagement of the step 16 with such edge. The plunger may be forked and the lever 12 fitted between the limbs 9, 10 one of which is longer than the other. To replace the writing unit 2, the step 16 is pressed inwardly beyond the edge of the hole 17, whereupon the plunger assembly and. unit 2 can be withdrawn from the barrel 1.
