Class 146(3) [Also in Group XXV] In a writing instrument the writing point carrier e.g. an ink reservoir or lead carriage, is axially displaceable in the barrel by means of a tilting lever having two arms one of which rests on a piston borne by the rear end of the carrier, the actuating arm being arranged at an angle to the control arm of the lever and the free end of the control arm being slidable in guide slots in the cap and in the pocket clip. The writing unit 6 of a ball-point pen is biased rearwards by a spring 9 and carries on its rear end a pistonlike member 14. A slotted sleeve 15 located in the rear end of a cap 2 carries a pin 16 on which is pivoted a lever 17 accommodated in the slot of the sleeve. The lever has two arms 18, 19 arranged at an acute angle to each other, of which one 19 projects through slots 20 in the cap and pocket clip 5 where it is accessible for manual operation. When the arm 19 is at the rear end of the slots 20, Fig. 1, the unit 6 is retracted: to project the unit the arm 19 is advanced to the front end of the slots 20 which causes the arm 18 to engage the rear end of the member 14 and exert a cam-like action thereon so that the member and writing unit are urged forward against the bias of the spring 9. Retraction of the unit may be effected automatically as the pen is clipped to the pocket by the edge of the pocket engaging the arm 19 between the clip and the barrel. In a modification, Fig. 5, the lever 17 is pivoted on a ring 24, which may be resilient, arranged in an annular groove in the sleeve 15, and the arms are disposed at an obtuse angle to each other, the unit being retracted when the arm 19 is at the front end of the slots.
