Class 146(3) A multiple ball-point pen having a plurality of ink cartridges 12 which can be projected from a position within the barrel 1 to writing position defined by a locking device, an actuating member 19 extending from the rear end of the barrel which permits a selected cartridge to be brought against the action of a spring, into writing position, and a device for selecting a desired cartridge, is characterized in that the selection device - has an eccentric rod 18 carried by a rotatable sleeve 15, the angular displacements of which are controlled by axial displacement of the actuating member 19. As shown, rods 10 to which ball-point cartridges 12 are detachably secured, are slidably mounted in a plate 8 having guiding apertures 9. The rods 10 are pressed rearwardly by springs 11, but may be projected into writing position by the push rod 18. The sleeve 15 is fixed to the actuating member 19 which is guided axially of the barrel by a rod 17 having a surrounding spring 24 which presses the members 15, 19 rearwardly. The sleeve 15 has two sets of cams 39, 40 which co-operate respectively with actuating pins 42, 41 on the barrel to effect rotation of the sleeve 15 upon depression and release of the member 19, thereby rotating the push rod 18 in stages about the axis of the barrel into a position to project a desired cartridge. This position is indicated by coloured sectors 51 on the sleeve 15 visible through a window 50 in the barrel. When the desired cartridge has been selected, the pin 42 is moved along a slot 43 out of the path of cams 39 thereby preventing further rotation of the sleeve 15 and push rod 18. With the pen held vertically so as to cause a loose ring 34 to drop on to a seating 38, the member 19 is depressed to project the selected pen, and is locked in such position by a spring-pressed pin 26 which engages under the front edge of a sleeve 30 secured to a cap 31. To release the pin 26 for retraction of the pen, the member 19 is further depressed causing the pin to be moved inwardly by engagement with an inclined surface 35 on the ring 34 and to snap into a groove 48 in the ring. Upon release of pressure on the member 19, it moves rearwardly carrying with it the ring 34. The movement of the ring however is stopped by the sleeve 30, so that the pin 26 snaps out of the groove 48 and moves upwardly inside the sleeve 30 as the member 19 continues its rearward movement. The ring 34 can then drop back ready for the further operation of the pen. Ball-bearings 22, 25 are provided between the member 19, and a knob 20 thereon, and between the end of the spring 24 and the plate 8 to avoid reverse rotation of the sleeve 15.
