Abstract

Class 146(3) A writing instrument 10 comprises a barrel housing for containing a retractable writing element 16 and latch means for controlling the projection and retraction of the element 16. the latch means comprising a lever 50 formed with a' pivot leg portion 52 joined to a latch block portion 54 having an abutment edge for engageing the rear end of the element 16, the leg portion 52 having an end formed for bearing against a laterally opposite surface to allow lateral rocking motion of the lever 50 about the bearing when pressure is applied substantially lengthwise of the leg portion 52. As shown the writing instrument 10 comprises a forward barrel portion 12 on which is screwed a rear barrel portion 14. The writing element 16 is slidably arranged within the barrel portion for projection into writing position against the action of a biasing spring 18. A plunger,34 is slidably arranged within the barrel portion 14 to receive the rear end of the element 16. The barrel portion 14 is also fitted with a liner sleeve. 36-that extends to the rear of the portion 14. so as to receive an eraser 24, and to the forward end of the portion 14 far enough to have ears 38 clinched therethrough for a pocket clip 40. The sleeve 36 and barrel portion 14 are longitudinally slotted at 42, 44 and the pocket clip 40 is formed with a corresponding slot 46. A latching lip 48 is provided on the clip 40 extending inwardly of the barrel portion 14. The block portion 54 of the latching lever 50 is adapted to co-operate with the plunger 34, and the pivot leg portion 52 extends through the slots in the sleeve 36 and barrel portion 14. The portion 52 is provided with an operating knob 62 which extends through the slot in the pocket clip 40. The latching lever 50 is provided with two latching notches 58 and 60 for co-operation with the lip 48 in the projected and retracted positions respectively To facilitate lateral pivoting of the lever 50 the leg portion 52 is tapered as at 64.
