Abstract
822,245. Reservoir pens. ROLL-TIP (ENGLAND) Ltd. Feb. 26, 1958 [June 11, 1957], No. 18460/57. Class 146(3) A retractable ball-point pen comprises a writing unit 16 of resilient material e.g. polythene, a plunger 13 projecting through the open rear end of the barrel and which has at its front end a portion 15 inclined to the axis of the barrel, engaging the rear end of the writing unit and bending the said rear end, and a spring 18 urging the plunger towards a position in which the writing point is retracted, the plunger being depressed to project the writing point and retained in that position by co-acting abutments 20, 21 which are maintained in engagement by lateral pressure exerted on the plunger by the bent rear end of the writing unit as the latter tends to straighten itself. As shown the abutment 21 is the lower end of a notch cut in the rear end of the plunger and the abutment 20 is a seating formed in the barrel. When the writing point is projected a lateral blade 22 on the plunger projects through a slot in the rear end of the barrel. To disengage the abutments 20, 21 the blade 22 is pressed laterally inwards and the plunger and writing unit are then retracted by the spring 18 until a shoulder 19 on the plunger engages the abutment 20. In a modification the plunger 13 extends further to the rear, the blade 22 and its slot in the barrel being omitted.
