Class 146(3) A retractable writing instrument includes a shoulder and face in separate planes spaced longitudinally of the barrel and an actuating means for moving the end of the instrument opposite to the writing point axially and laterally within the barrel, the means including a reciprocable plunger having a pair of parallel bores provided in the barrel and a cam follower in operative engagement with that end of the instrument and having a tip insertable into the bores, the shoulder and face being adapted to abut the cam follower and hold the instrument in projected and retracted positions respectively. As shown, a ball-point pen unit, 11 is slidable in a barrel comprising parts 14 and 15 screwed together, the unit 11 being pressed rearwardly by a spring 18. A cap 22. having a projection 21 fits loosely over the rear end of the unit, such that in the projected position, as shown, of the unit, the projection enters a bore 30, the unit being retained in this position by a shoulder 34 engaging the cap 22. Depression of a plunger 25, carrying prongs 28 and 29. causes the prong 28 to engage the rear end of the projection 21. The prong 28 has a cam surface 38 which causes the projection 21 to be displaced laterally and axially in the barrel, such that its rear end enters an inclined groove 48, Fig. 5, in a portion 24 adjacent the front end of the bore 30. Release of the plunger 25, Fig. 1, allows the projection 21 to enter a bore 31, such that the unit 11 is retracted until the cap 22 engages a face 36. A further depression and release of the plunger 25 causes the projection 21, through a cam surface 39 on the prong 29. to return to the bore 30 via a second inclined groove 49, Fig. 5.
