Abstract

1,194,259. Propelling pencils. PARKER PEN CO. 17 Aug., 1967 [18 Aug., 1966], No. 38001/67. Heading B6P. A magazine pencil comprises a cartridge unit 20 having a tubular shell 50 which is removably supported in the pencil barrel 16. A guide tube 73 communicates with a magazine or lead chamber 68 at its rear end, and is formed at its forward end with a collet mechanism 86. A clutch mechanism 83 for feeding the lead forward through the guide tube 73 when the rear end of the magazine 68 is depressed, comprises a body portion (84, Fig. 8) slidably mounted on the guide tube and provided with a pair of spring fingers 80, 81 in register with longitudinal slots 78, 79 in the guide tube. A tubular clutch seat 55 held in the tapered portion 50a of the shell 50 by an annular shoulder 58, constitutes a cam device which causes the spring fingers 80, 81 to grip the lead and advance the same. A spring 65 biases the magazine 68 and the guide tube 73 rearwardly away from the seat 55. The rear of pencil is provided with a pushbutton actuator 27, which houses an eraser 30. The forward end of the push-button is provided with cam surfaces 41a, 42a, which in the particular embodiment serve no purpose, but could be used in a retractable writing instrument, such as a retractable ball-point pen. In the particular embodiment the forward-most ends of the cam surfaces engage the rear 44 of the magazine 68.
