[Class 146 (iii)] In a holder 1 for a pencil and a pen the latter are disposed on the opposite faces of an intermediate plate 9, and the pencil comprises a fork A slidable in guides 17 on the plate against the action of a spring 20. On the plate 9 is a fixed guide 11, a movable guide 12, and a fixed guide 14 for a pencil lead 31. The free ends 7, 8 of the fork A pass through the guides 11, 12 and are adapted to grip the lead 31. Wedge-shaped projections 32, 33 on the ends 7, 8, on the forward movement of the fork to feed the lead, displace the guide 12 until the latter abuts stop shoulders 34 on the plate 9, and the continued movement of the fork causes the projections 32, 33 to move beyond the guide and thus allow the ends 7, 8 to spring apart and release the lead 31. On retraction of the fork A by the spring 20, the guide 12 is retracted by the projections 32, 33, and the ends 7, 8 engage the lead to retract the latter for a distance which is shorter than the forward feed. The fork A is moved by a member 23 adapted to abut the fork and project beyond the rear end of the casing 1. The pen unit comprises a casing 15 which is tapered at the front end and provided with a ball writing point. It is guided for movement relative to the plate 9 by arms 16 formed integral with the guides 17, and is slotted for the reception of a member 24 projecting beyond the rear end of the holder 1. Compression springs are arranged between the member 24 and the arms 16. The pen unit is projected for use by depressing the member 24, and engaging a tooth 35<SP>1</SP> thereon with a similar tooth 35 on the member 23 ; before this operation, however, the pencil lead is released from the ends of the fork A, and pressed within the holder.
