675,589. Pencil holders. BERGONZO, C. Aug. 23, 1949 [Aug. 27, 1948], No. 21903/49. Class 146 (iii). A pencil in which the lead may be readily changed, for example a pencil in which two or more differently coloured leads are used, comprises an outer casing 1, an axially-movable lead guide tube 3 urged upwardly by a spring 4, and a lead-retaining sleeve 5 urged downwardly by the spring 4. The sleeve 5 has resilient gripping jaws formed by slots 8a, while a holder 2 secured to the tube 3 is also provided with resilient gripping jaws formed by slots 8. When the tube 3 is pressed downwardly, a lead passes freely through the tube and sleeve 5 until it strikes a portion 9 of the holder having a reduced diameter. When the tube is retracted by the spring 4, the jaws of the holder 2 are opened by co-operation of a portion 14 of the holder with a tapering portion 5a on the sleeve 5, thus allowing the lead to pass through them and be gripped in the writing position by cooperation of both sets of jaws. To permit the holder to slide axially, integral lugs 6 on the sleeve 5 pass through longitudinal slots 7 in the holder.
