Class 146(3) A writing instrument comprises a barrel housing a writing unit urged towards a retracted position within the barrel, the unit being movable into a projected position for writing by its own inertia in response to shaking the instrument and retained in projected position by releasable means. As shown, a ball-point pen unit 18 is slidable in a barrel 14 into projected position where it is retained by interengaging wedging surfaces 28, 46. Downward pressure, exerted on ball point 50, in excess of that normally used during writing frees the unit 18 for retraction effected by a permanent magnet 38 which attracts a magnetic disc 52 mounted in the rear end of the unit. In a modification, the unit is retracted by a helical spring surrounding the unit and engaging a flange thereon and may be projected by depression of a push button. In another modification co-operating wedging surfaces are provided on the pen unit and in the barrel intermediate their ends instead of at their front ends.
