Magazine wrenches with chuck-like grip; retaining in engagement.-A magazine spanner, primarily for use with flanged or collared nuts, comprises dogs adapted to be moved into engagement with the opposite faces of a nut by a sliding or rotary sleeve and resilient means for retaining the nuts within the bore of the spanner. The spanner shown in Figs. 2 and 3 comprises a body 8 formed of a length of tube provided at the rear end with a plug for turning it, with the usual spring and sliding block forming a back stop for the nuts, and at the front end with leaf or wire springs 15 the forward ends of which project through holes in the tube to retain the nuts therein. The unscrewing or screwing operation is effected by dogs 13 received in an annular recess 12a in a sliding sleeve 12, the dogs 13 being connected together by a C-spring 14 which maintains them normally in withdrawn position. By moving the sleeve 12 to the right, the dogs are actuated by the sloping end of the recess 12a so as to be projected through slots 8<a> in the tube 8 and to be engaged with the opposite faces of the nut. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the sleeve 12 is held in the forward position by a spring 16, acting between a collar 17 fixed to the tubular body 8 and an annular shoulder 12<c> on the sleeve, and is actuated to grip the dogs on the nut by forcing it against the work. The sleeve may also be constructed so as to actuate the dogs by a rotary movement.
