T. E. TIEFENBACHER WRENCH mwa mmh 2'1.. 1923 al?, um'
ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 9, 1924.
sA'rEs THOMAS B. TIEFENBACHER, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
WRENCH.
Application filed March 21, 1923. V*Serial No. 626,450.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. TIEFEN- eaorinn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to that class of wrenches in which the movable j aw is adjusted by turning a screw or a nut on a screw.
The object of the invention is the production in a wrench of the type specied of novel means adapted to resist movement of the nut or screw as the case may be, to prevent movement of the movable jaw after it has been shifted to the desired position.
To the above ends my invention consists in the novel wrench hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary monkey wrench embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a diiferent type of wrench embodying the invention.
Fig. t is a horizontal section on the line Ll-l of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing:
The handle of the wrench is indicated at 1, the body at 2, the movable jaw which is slidable on the body at 8 and the fixed jaw at et. A screw 5 extends upwardly into the movable jaw 3 as ordinarily and vcarries a nut 6 which is fast thereon and the rotation of which rotates the screw and causes the jaw 3 to travel upwardly or downwardly on the body 2, depending of course on the direction of rotation given the nut. The nut 6 is provided with a slot or groove 7.
A spring is indicated at 8 and it is coiled within the groove or slot 7 as shown with one end thereof fixed or anchored and extending within the body 2. The spring on the nut exerts a pressure against both walls of the groove or slot longitudinally of the screw or in a direction transverse to the plane of the nut and acts to retain the nut in any adjusted position whereby accidental rotation of the nut or screw and a consequent movement of the movable jaw will be prevented.
The modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 shows the invention as applied to a different type wrench in which the handle is indicated at 10, the body at 11, the movable jaw at l2 and the fixed jaw at 13. In this case the movable jaw is provided with a threaded shank or screw 14 which passes through a housing 15 which is pivoted to the body 11. A. movable nut isthreaded over the shank 14 and is mounted to turn within the housing 15. Rotation of the nut moves the movable 'aw as is obvious. The nut is also Grooved b or slotted as at 16 within which slot a spring 17 is coiled or encircled with one end thereof fixed or extending within a wall of the housing 15 and the function of which is the same as in theprevious case.
It lwill be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the specie types of wrenches; shown but may be applied with equal advantage to other types.
It will also be understood that when I refer to the term nut that term shall also include in the preferred form of the invention the screw on which the nut is fast.
What Iclaim as my invention is l. In a wrench, a fixed jaw and a movable jaw adapted to cooperate therewith7 a' nut for moving said movable jaw and a spring having one end encircling said nut and the other end anchored in a fixed part of the wrench, said spring exerting pressure of a constant nature against said nut in a direction transevrse to the plane of said nut.
2. In a wrench, a fixed jaw and a movable jaw adapted to cooperate therewith, a nut for moving said movable jaw and having a groove therein providing opposed walls
