A handle unit for operating door bolts 18a comprises a handle 4a having a stem 3a which may be held in the retracted position shown by automatically-fastening means so that the handle 4a is located in a closely fitting recess formed by a surround 6a, spring means for ejecting the handle from the recess on releasing the fastening means and stop means for halting the spring-ejection of the handle when the latter reaches an intermediate position clear of the recess, so that the handle can be gripped and pulled manually from this intermediate position into its fully projected position, in which it can be turned for operating the bolts. As shown, the automatically-fastening means comprises a spring-loaded bolt 24a projecting from the handle stem 3a to engage behind the end of a housing 2a. Operation of a barrellock 5a retracts the bolt 24a so that the latter can enter a longitudinal groove 2b formed in housing 2a. A spring 22a ejects the handle and bolt 24a. moves along groove 2b until a collar 35 abuts the end face of a sleeve 30 to determine the intermediate position. The sleeve 30 is axially slidable over housing 2a, interengaging lugs and grooves (not shown) limiting this sliding movement. Thus, the handle may be pulled from the intermediate position to its fully projecting position, sleeve 30 being moved to the left from the position shown. On reaching the fully projected position, the bolt 24a may enter a lateral extension (not shown) of groove 2b thus permitting turning of the handle.
