Abstract
548,266. Pencil holders. BLAKE, W. H. (Fabrique Suisse de Crayons Caran d'Ache Soc. Anon). March 31, 1941, No. 4292. [Class 146 (iii)] A propelling pencil has slidable lead-feeding and lead-retaining jaws both of which project from the body of the holder. A pair of opposed feed-jaws 6, Figs. 3 and 6, having resilient limbs, are attached to a tube 4 slidable in the body 1 of the pencil, and are operated by a cap against the pressure of a spring 13. Between the feed-jaws are located retaining-jaws 5, the resilient limbs of which are integral with a tube 14 surrounding the tube 4 and frictionally engaging a boss 10 thereon. The tube 14 is also controlled by the spring 13, which bears against a flange 16 thereon. The feedjaws 6 tend to close on the lead, and the retaining- jaws 5 tend to move apart. When the cap is depressed, both pairs of jaws at first move outwards together, owing to the frictional engagement between the tubes 4, 14. The jaws 5 are then arrested by the engagement of a shoulder 18 on the tube 14 with the tapered part of the body 1. The jaws 6 continue to move outwards, carrying the lead with them to the position shown in Fig. 4. On the release of the cap, both pairs of jaws are retracted. The jaws 5 are arrested by engagement with the mouth of the holder, which forces them together, so that the lead is clamped. The jaws 6 then slide over the lead and return to intitial position, in which they also clamp the lead. A magazine tube 2 for leads is located between the tube 4 and the cap. It communicates with the tube 4 by means such as a conical hole, to ensure that the leads pass out one by one.
