A propelling pencil of the kind operated by a push-cap and provided with a gripper for holding the lead which upon release from the gripper can slip forwards or backwards under the action of gravity according to the position of the pencil is characterized by a movable ring 11 which when pressed sufficiently far downwards by the end face 7 of the gripper 6 can force the split bore of the tip 1 apart and so allow a lead to pass freely through to or from a storage space within the pencil. The grippers 6, movable downwardly against the action of a spring 5 by the push-cap (not shown), are normally clamped by a slidable clamping sleeve 12 moved a certain distance with the grippers G when they are pressed downwardly, the downward movement of the sleeve. being limited by a flange 15 which engages an adjustable ring 14. When the grippers 6 are released from the sleeve 12, a lead may drop through the grippers on to the upper end of the base in the tip 1. Release of the push-cap causes the gripper 6 to be clamped by the sleeve 12. A further depression of the push-cap causes the lead to be projected through the bore of the tip a definite amount depending on the position of the ring 14, while each successive depression causes a similar projection.
