[Class 146 (iii)] In a propelling pencil a lead guide tube 3 has clamping jaws 4 projecting from a casing 1 and urged rearwardly into a conical bore 2 by a spring 5, an annular ring 15 being slidably mounted on the tube 3 and carrying jaws 12 mounted on resilient arms 14 which grip the lead 8 through longitudinal slots 13 in the tube 3. The upper end of the tube 3 forms a magazine 6 having an operating knob 7. By depression of the knob 7 the tube 3 and jaws 4 advance a corresponding distance until a shoulder 11 on the magazine engages the ring 15 which is then advanced with the tube 3 so that the arms 14 pass into a reduced bore 19 in the casing 1 and cause the jaws 12 to grip the lead and feed it forward relatively to the casing 1. During the forward movement the jaws 4 leave the conical bore 2 and their grip on the lead is relaxed. On release of the knob 7 the jaws 4 and the tube 3 are retracted by the spring 5 while the jaws 12 gripping the lead 8 are held by the arms 14 which frictionally engage the reduced bore 19 until the jaws 12 are retracted by an abutment 10 on the tube 13. In a modification a sleeve is inserted in the casing 1 in place of providing the casing with a reduced bore 19.
