Abstract

621,302. Propelling pencils. MAHLER, D. Feb. 14, 1947, No. 4397. [Class 146 (iii)] In a propelling pencil of the kind in which an internal lead-carrying tube is adapted to be pressed forwardly by hand and returned by spring pressure, a clamping device carried by the tube being adapted to be closed to grip the lead during its forward movement by a slidable clamping sleeve adapted to engage abutments at each end of its travel, the clamping sleeve is permanently housed within the nose portion 12 of the pencil. The clamping sleeve 25 has a part 30 which co-operates with a clamping device 20 formed on the end of a lead-carrying tube 17, and is movable between two abutments 27 and 28 formed in the nose 12. Depression of the button 19 causes the device 20 and sleeve 25 to advance until the sleeve 25 is arrested by the abutment 27, after which the lead 29 is released by the clamping device 20 and is gripped lightly by a bore 33 while on release of the button 19 the sleeve 25 and device 20 are retracted by a spring 21 until the sleeve 25 is arrested by the abutment 28, after which the sleeve 25 closes the device 20 to grip the lead again The push button assembly 15 and the body portion are connected by a connector 14 provided with a flange 34 which ensures that the connector 14 is correctly positioned in the casing.
