[Class 146 (iii)] A reservoir fountain pen comprises an overflow ink collector which prevents excess ink from reaching the nib through which ink is drawn into the reservoir and means operative in response to replacement of a cap for the tilling mechanism on the fountain pen for actuating the filling mechanism to draw ink from the collector into the reservoir after the pen has been withdrawn from the source of ink supply. A fountain pen comprises a cellular overflow collector 13 connected to a reservoir 12 by a breather tube 18, the reservoir being filled by reciprocation of a plunger 20 carrying a flexible diaphragm 21 clamped to the barrel by a sleeve 22 secured by a nut 24. The plunger 20 is urged rearwardly by a spring 36 interposed between the head 37 of a latch 38 having a blade member 42 and a key 39 working in slots 40 in the plunger and fixed to the sleeve 22. During depression of the plunger a stop 43 slides inwardly ; the stop engages the key 39 on the return stroke thus limiting its outward travel, Fig. 3. The key 39 is released when the pen has been removed from the supply of ink by replacement of a cap 28 which carries a release member 44 which presses the latch 38 outwardly. The plunger then completes its return stroke to drain the overflow 13. In a modification, the limiting means for the return stroke of the plunger is dependent on the rotation of the plunger during the inward stroke which is released by screwing on the end cap. Further modifications describe the application to a collapsable sac pen in which a presser bar co-operates with a cam surface so that the sac is slightly compressed when a plunger actuating the presser bar is fully extended but the sac is fully expanded by moving the plunger inwardly by screwing on a cap covering the plunger.
