[Class 146 (iii)] A combined fountain pen and magazine pencil is characterized by a fountain pen part and a propelling magazine pencil part connected together so that the barrel of the pencil is axially slidable relatively to the fountain pen to permit feeding the pencil leads by relative compression of the two parts. A fountain pen A screwed into an intermediate part B comprises an ink reservoir 2 filled by a hollow piston 3 which may be reciprocated by a spindle 5 which screws into an internally screw threaded nipple rotatable by a cap 12 when the pen A is withdrawn from the part B. The part B is provided at its lower end with two keys 19 preventing rotation of the pencil barrel 20 which is slidable into the part B against a spring 38. A lead refill chamber 26 screwed into the part B at its upper end carries jaws 29 at its lower end. The jaws 29 co-operate with a clamping sleeve 34 to grip the lead. To project a lead held in the writing position the barrel 20 is pressed back until a shoulder 20* on the tip 36 bears against an abutment 34* on the sleeve 34 ; during this movement the lead is forced forwards through the tip 36. Further backward movement causes the sleeve 34 to be forced upwardly out of engagement with the jaws 29 which release the lead. On release of the barrel 20 the spring 38 forces the barrel forwards while the lead is carried down by the tip 36 which resiliently grips the lead. The abutment 34* engages the jaws 29 at the end of the forward movement of the casing so as to retain the lead in the writing position.
