Abstract

594,321. Reservoir pens. PARKER PEN CO. March 15, 1945, No. 6531. Convention date, April 10, 1944. [Class 146 (iii)] In a fountain pen having ink-feeding mechanism and a rib housed in a one-piece shell that encloses the nib so that only the extreme point is exposed, the shell, nib and ink feeding devices including the reservoir are formed as a unit which is detachable from the pen barrel. The feed member 12 is of elongated form with a longitudinal eccentric hole 22 to receive a hollow cylindrical shank 15b on the nib 15. A spring 28 presses the nib outwardly, the movement being limited by the engagement of the flared inner end 15c of the shank 15b with the similarly-shaped end of the hole 22. The shell 13 which is a close fit on the member 12 and abuts against a rib 20 thereon, has a reduced inner end which is engaged frictionally or by threading within the end of the barrel 10, so that the parts 12, 13, 15 can be removed as a unit from the barrel. An ink sac 16 is attached to the inner end of the member 12 so that it forms part of the unit. Circumferential capillary grooves 25 increasing in width towards the pen point are formed in the member 12 and are intersected by a longitudinal groove 26 in communication with the ink reservoir and of lesser width than the grooves 25. An air channel 27 also intersecting the grooves 25 is formed on the lower face of the member 12. When the pen is filled, ink fills the shank 15b and passages 25, 26, 27. During subsequent use, the nib first takes ink from the passages 25 by capillary action thus freeing the air passage 27 whereupon ink flows normally from the reservoir 16 through the tube 15b and passage 26. The passages 25 also serve to absorb any overflow, thus closing the air passage, until the ink in these passages has been used.
