In a fountain pen of the kind in which the reservoir is refilled with ink by capillary action when the pen point is dipped into a supply of ink, the reservoir has disposed therein a stack of discs 50, 60 of absorbent material, such as cotton gauze, having a mesh structure, the meshes being superimposed to form capillary channels longitudinally of the reservoir. Water-repellent discs coated with water-absorbent material may be used. Proceeding in a direction away from the nib, the mesh size in the discs may increase in size so that the capillary action varies along the reservoir. The pen comprises two sections 10, 11 joined by screw-threads, the discs 50 in the part 10 being of smaller diameter than the discs 50 in the part 11, and the stack of discs is held against a shoulder 17 by a cork, &c. ring 61. The end chamber 62 communicates with the atmosphere through a hole 63. In a modification, the ring 61 forms part of a tubular baffle member fitted in the end chamber, and a side air vent in the part 10 is in communication with the inside of the baffle member through one or more holes in the latter. The front of the section 11 has a reduced bore 18 in which is fitted a tubular nib B, Fig. 3, which is held in position by a pin 70, Fig. 2, passing through the section 11 and engaging in an open-ended slot 27 in the nib. A rod 33, slotted at 36, fits resiliently within the tubular nib, and a flexible liner member 40 fits between the nib and the bore 18. The liner 40 is of absorptive material such as cotton, wool, &c. and is in engagement with the discs 50 of the stack. The forward edge of the liner may be impregnated or coated with synthetic resin or other water-repellent material to prevent evaporation of the ink and ingress of air into the front of the reservoir.
