Abstract

941,439. Pens. ROLL TIP (ENGLAND) Ltd. July 27, 1962 [Aug. 14, 1961], No. 29309/61. Heading B6P. [Also in Division A4] A liquid-applying instrument comprises a cartridge 12 filled with ink or other liquid, a feed member 18 adapted to fit into an opening in the cartridge to permit a flow of ink from the cartridge and a controlled intake of air into the cartridge, and a tip 20 of a matt or felt of fibrous material extending from the end of the member 18 remote from the cartridge so as to receive ink therefrom. The tip 20 is of circular cross-section and is a push-fit in a bore 21 in the forward end of the nose portion 15 of the instrument. Ink is drawn by capillary action through a slot 22 in the feed member 18 when the tip 20 is drawn across the paper and air enters the cartridge by passing along a slot 27, around circumferential grooves 24 and into a longitudinal slot, Fig. 3 (not shown), diametrically opposite the slot 27. If excess ink is delivered the grooves 24 become blocked with ink and the entry of air into the cartridge is prevented, thus cutting off the supply of further ink.
