[Class 146 (iii).] In a fountain pen in which the barrel is closed at one end by a flexible diaphragm adapted to be flexed by means of a reciprocable element yieldingly urged towards one extreme position of reciprocation, as described in Specification 318,982, [Class 146 (iii)], positive locking means comprising co-operating locking parts carried respectively by the reciprocable element and the barrel or a part connected thereto is provided for releasably securing the reciprocable element in its other extreme position, the locking means being additional to the cap for concealing the reciprocable element where such cap is provided. The flexible rubber diaphragm 19 closing the end of the barrel 12 is provided with a lug 20 having a groove 21 into which fits a flange 22 of the reciprocable plunger 23, being held in position by a tightlyfitting plug 41. The upper end of the diaphragm is gripped between a fixed member 25 and a sleeve 26, held by a nut 28 which screws into the end of the barrel. A spring 35 is situated within the hollow plunger 23 and is normally compressed between a closure cap 36 and a pin 37, which passes through slots 32 in the plunger and is fixed in the sleeve 26. In the inoperative position, the plunger is held down against the action of the spring 35 by the pin 37 which is engaged by cutouts 34 at the upper ends of the slots 32 by slightly rotating the cap 36 and the plunger. For filling the pen, the cap is rotated oppositely, freeing the plunger, which is then reciprocated to expel air through the tube 18 and draw in ink through the duct 16. The front section 13 of the pen is formed integrally with the barrel and the nut 28 is screwthreaded to receive a cap 30 or a tapering end.
